1996 World Cup India vs Pakistan Quarter-Final match, Bengaluru
India hosted Pakistan in the 1996 World Cup Quarter-Final match at M.Chinnaswamy Stadium at Bengaluru. The hosts batted first and posted a huge score of 287 in first innings. Led by opener Navjot Singh Sidhu at the top, Pakistan had no answers as Sidhu scored a fluent 93 to deflate the ‘Men in Green'. India's first innings total was further strengthened by Ajay Jadeja's blistering 25-ball 45 in the final few overs.
Chasing 288 for victory, Pakistan made a strong start with an 84-run opening stand but lost their way midway through the innings. Venkatesh Prasad's dismissal to get rid of Aamer Sohail still happens to be one of the iconic moments of the India-Pakistan cricket rivalry. Pakistan could only manage to score 248 runs as India won an intense game by 39 runs to qualify for the 1996 World Cup Semi-Final.
This was India's second consecutive victory over arch-rivals in World Cup history.
