Chennai Super Kings vs Rajasthan Royals match preview
Chennai Super Kings
The Super Kings, led by MS Dhoni, started their campaign with a five-wicket defeat at the hands of defending champions Gujarat Titans. But two wins in a row have put their campaign back on track. They will go into the game after beating the Mumbai Indians by seven wickets at the Wankhede Stadium.
Ajinkya Rahane made his debut for CSK and smashed a half-century off 19 balls, the fastest in the ongoing IPL edition. Rahane’s fifty was also the joint second-fastest by a CSK batter in the history of the T20 league. On the back of his knock, the four-time IPL champions chased down 158 with as many as 11 balls to spare.
Ravindra Jadeja, however, became the Player of the Match for his spell of 4-0-20-3 where he got the wickets of Ishan Kishan, Cameron Green and Tilak Varma.
The Super Kings, in the meantime, are facing a couple of injury concerns. Ben Stokes missed the previous game due to a toe injury and it remains to be seen if he gets fit for the upcoming clash.
Deepak Chahar sustained a hamstring injury last time around and was forced to leave the field. The extent of his injury will only be known after scans.
CSK possible XI: Devon Conway, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ajinkya Rahane, Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni (c & wk), Shivam Dube, Dwaine Pretorius, Rajvardhan Hangargekar/Akash Singh, Mitchell Santner, Sisanda Magala, Tushar Deshpande
Rajasthan Royals
The Royals, led by Sanju Samson, have had a reasonable campaign thus far. Their net run rate of +2.067 is the best among all the 10 teams taking part in the tournament. They started their campaign with a thumping 72-run win over Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s Sunrisers Hyderabad, but lost to Shikhar Dhawan’s Punjab Kings by five runs.
However, they got back to winning ways after beating David Warner’s Delhi Capitals by 57 runs in their previous game. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Jos Buttler carried their good form and helped the Royals post a stiff target of 200 for their opponents to track down.
Thereafter, Trent Boult picked up the wickets of Rahul Tripathi and Abhishek Sharma in the very first over to leave the Sunrisers’ innings in absolute tatters. SRH finished their innings at 142 for nine.
RR possible XI: Jos Buttler, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson (c & wk), Riyan Parag, Shimron Hetmyer, Dhruv Jurel, Ravichandran Ashwin, Jason Holder, Trent Boult, Sandeep Sharma, Yuzvendra Chahal
Pitch and expected weather conditions
The pitch in Chennai was an absolute belter when CSK returned to the venue after four years. Spinners are also likely to play a part. Winning the toss and field first should be the way forward for teams. There is no chance of rain as of now. Temperatures will be around the 71-degree Celsius mark.

Match prediction: Chennai Super Kings Kings to win
CSK have been a tough team to beat at the Chepauk. Since 2013, barring Mumbai Indians, every other team has struggled to beat them at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. The Super Kings will go into the match as firm favourites without much of a doubt.
Toss prediction: CSK to win the toss and field first
Chennai Super Kings should opt to field first after winning the toss. The pitch may not have a lot for the bowlers and dew may also play a big part, especially in the second half of the match.
Man of the match prediction: Ruturaj Gaikwad
Ruturaj Gaikwad is currently in the form of his life. The right-handed batter scored a couple of brisk half-century in the first two games for the Super Kings. If he gets going, the Royals may find themselves in all sorts of trouble at the Chepauk.
Betting Odds
- Chennai Super Kings: 1.805
- Rajasthan Royals: 2.005
As per the bookmakers, Chennai Super Kings have a higher chance of winning the match, which is what we also think. CSK have been a force to be reckoned with in home conditions and the Royals will have to play out of their skins to secure victory.
