Kolkata Knight Riders vs Royal Challengers Bangalore match preview

Kolkata Knight Riders

Kolkata Knight Riders have already have their fair share of troubles. Even as Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out due to an injury, Lockie Ferguson is yet to recover from the hamstring strain he sustained before New Zealand’s home ODI series against Sri Lanka.

Things got worse for KKR after Shakib Al Hasan opted out of the tournament due to personal and international commitments. The Knights did not get off to the best of starts after losing to Shikhar Dhawan’s Punjab Kings (PBKS) by seven runs (DLS) in their opening game at the PCA Stadium in Mohali.

Chasing a stiff target of 192, KKR lost wickets at regular intervals, which eventually pushed them below the DLS par score. Andre Russell smashed his way to 35 off 19 balls with three fours and two sixes, but his efforts went in vain. Tim Southee did get two wickets but was taken for 54 runs in his quota of four overs.

KKR possible XI: Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), Mandeep Singh, Nitish Rana (c), Rinku Singh, Andre Russell, Shardul Thakur, Sunil Narine, Tim Southee, Anukul Roy, Umesh Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy

Royal Challengers Bangalore

Royal Challengers Bangalore got off to a flying start in the tournament after thrashing five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians by eight wickets at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. Barring the phase where Tilak Varma scored an unbeaten 84 off 46 for MI, RCB looked in command.

Akash Deep, Mohammed Siraj, Reece Topley and Michael Bracewell dismissed Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Cameron Green and Suryakumar Yadav, reducing MI to 48 for four in 8.5 overs.

Thereafter, Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis put on 148 runs for the opening wicket off 14.5 overs to fizzle the spirit out of the MI bowlers. Glenn Maxwell also entertained the crowd at the Chinnaswamy with two massive sixes off his Australian teammate Green.

Topley, in the meantime, dislocated his right shoulder and is unlikely to take part against KKR. He is likely to be replaced by David Willey. Rajat Patidar has been ruled out due to an Achilles Heel injury.

RCB possible XI: Virat Kohli, Faf du Plessis (c), Glenn Maxwell, Michael Bracewell, Shahbaz Ahmed, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Karn Sharma, Harshal Patel, David Willey, Akash Deep, Mohammed Siraj

Pitch and expected weather conditions

The pitch at the Eden Gardens is an excellent one for the batters. Bowlers are expected to have a fair amount of challenge. The last time when the two sides met in Kolkata, Virat Kohli scored a hundred after which Andre Russell nearly pulled off a stupendous effort with an unbeaten 65 off 25 balls. Teams should opt to field first after winning the toss as the track is not expected to change much.

Playing conditions will be pleasant and there is no chance of rain for the time being. Temperatures will be around the 29-degree Celsius mark. The conditions, however, will be extremely humid.

Match prediction: RCB to win

Kolkata Knight Riders dominated Royal Challengers Bangalore for a long time in the IPL. But RCB have turned the tables on their opponents in the last few seasons. RCB have won five out of their last seven matches against the Men in Gold and Purple. Both teams got off to contrasting starts in the tournament and RCB will be high on confidence after their performance against Rohit Sharma’s men.

Toss prediction: KKR to win the toss and field first

If KKR win the toss, they should opt to field first. The pitch in Kolkata has favored the chasing teams in the past, the Knight Riders will have their best chance of beating RCB if they get to bat second.

Man of the match prediction: Virat Kohli

Back in 2019, Virat Kohli scored his 5th IPL hundred against the Knight Riders and helped RCB beat KKR by 10 runs. The 34-year-old has been in stupendous form in 2023 and scored an unbeaten 82 against MI. Kohli has played well plenty of times against KKR in past and has a decent chance to score big yet again.

Betting Odds

  • Kolkata Knight Riders: 2.175
