Mumbai Indians vs Chennai Super Kings match preview
Mumbai Indians
MI, led by Rohit Sharma, got off to a dreadful start in their campaign after Faf du Plessis’ Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) beat them by eight wickets at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Mumbai.
Barring Tilak Varma and Nehal Vadhera, none of their batters put up a fight. Varma was their star batter after he scored 84 runs off 46 balls and stayed unbeaten with the help of nine fours and four sixes. The likes of Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Tim David and Cameron Green failed to get going.
It was because of Varma’s knock that MI were able to post 171 for seven on the board after initially being reduced to 48.4 in 8.5 overs. Arshad Khan and Cameron Green picked up one wicket apiece, but RCB chased down the target with 22 balls to spare.
MI possible XI: Rohit Sharma (c), Ishan Kishan (wk), Suryakumar Yadav, Cameron Green, Tilak Varma, Tim David, Nehal Wadhera, Hrithik Shokeen, Piyush Chawla, Jofra Archer, Arshad Khan
Chennai Super Kings
MS Dhoni’s CSK did not get off to the best of starts after losing to defending champions Gujarat Titans by five wickets at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. However, they made amends by beating KL Rahul’s Lucknow Super Giants by 12 runs at the Chepauk.
The Super Kings returned to their home-ground in Chennai after three years and did not let down their fans. Tushar Deshpande had 28 runs to defend in the last over and he did his job successfully.
After being put in to bat first, CSK racked up a massive score of 217 for the loss of seven wickets. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway laid the platform with a partnership of 11 runs off 9.1 overs. Ambati Rayudu played a handy cameo of 27 runs off 14 balls.
But it was MS Dhoni’s two sixes off Mark Wood that ended up making all the difference. Moeen Ali finished with figures of 4-0-26-4 to make sure that the Super Giants fell short of their target.
CSK possible XI: Devon Conway, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Moeen Ali, Ben Stokes, Ambati Rayudu, Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni (c & wk), Shivam Dube, Mitchell Santner, Deepak Chahar, RS Hangargekar

Match prediction: The team batting second to win
The chasing teams have had a big advantage in most IPL matches played at the Wankhede Stadium. Targets in excess of 200 are also chasable at the venue in Mumbai.
Toss prediction: CSK to win the toss and field first
It goes without saying that batting has been CSK’s stronger point thus far. Their bowlers have come under the pump in both their matches. The Super Kings should opt to field first if they win the toss.
Man of the match prediction: Ruturaj Gaikwad
Ruturaj Gaikwad is currently going through a purple patch in IPL 2023. After scoring 92 against the Titans, the right-handed chipped in with a 23-ball fifty against the Super Giants. Keeping in mind the kind of form he is in, it won’t be a surprise if he takes the attack to the MI bowlers, who will be a little low on confidence after the match against RCB.
Betting Odds
- Mumbai Indians: 1.9
- Chennai Super Kings: 1.9
As per the bookies, there is absolutely nothing to separate the two teams. The bookmakers believe that both teams have equal chances of winning as of now. Numbers favor MI ahead of the match, but CSK are in better form.
