West Indies took a 1-0 lead in the two-Test series by beating Bangladesh by eight wickets at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur on 31 October 2026, the fourth day of the match. They chased 170 in 35.1 overs after Bangladesh were bowled out for 142 in their second innings. Jomel Warrican took nine wickets in the match and was named Player of the Match.
Shadman Islam’s hundred was not enough
Bangladesh won the toss, batted and made 272 in 97.4 overs. Shadman Islam faced 234 balls for his 105, with 11 fours. Towhid Hridoy added 42 off 86, and Litton Das finished unbeaten on 34.
Warrican took 5/53 in 23.4 overs. Joshua Bishop and Shamar Joseph claimed two wickets each.
West Indies replied with 245 in 82.5 overs, 27 behind. John Campbell made 54 off 78 balls, including six fours and two sixes. Tagenarine Chanderpaul batted 184 balls for 56. Justin Greaves made 46 and Roston Chase hit 43 off 60. Nayeem Hasan took 4/33 in 10.5 overs, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Taijul Islam had two wickets each.
The second-innings collapse
Bangladesh were bowled out in 48.4 overs, and at one point they were 35/5. Chase took 5/36 in 15.4 overs, his fifth five-wicket haul in Tests, and Warrican added 4/63. Nayeem Hasan made his first Test fifty, 52 in 91 balls. Jaker Ali scored 22 off 34. No other batter passed 13, and the lead of 27 did not last. Sri Lanka’s Sunday Times reported that Taijul Islam’s dismissal was Chase’s 100th Test wicket.
King finishes the chase
The target of 170 cost West Indies two wickets. Campbell made 49 off 55 balls before Shoriful Islam bowled him, and Chanderpaul fell for 1. Brandon King batted through to the end unbeaten on 81, having faced 115 balls, with 10 fours and a six, which Al Jazeera described as a career best. Kavem Hodge hit 31 not out off 27 balls.

What Shanto and Chase said
Sri Lanka’s Sunday Times reported that Jaker Ali came in as a concussion substitute for Mominul Haque and that Najmul Hossain Shanto left the field injured after a dropped catch. Afterwards, Shanto said the plans and the intent were right but the execution failed in batting, bowling and fielding, fielding most of all.
Chase said West Indies had lost the first-innings lead and still wanted to fight back. The game turned on 48.4 overs of batting, not on the first innings: against two spinners, Bangladesh gave away a lead they had just earned.
The second Test began in Sylhet on 5 November, and a draw there will be enough for West Indies to win the series.
