Virat Kohli hits a century – List of most T20 fifties by a player

Virat Kohli, who is third on the list of most T20 fifties by a player, reached a mega milestone on Monday. Kohli looked in sublime touch in the Royal Challengers Bangalore’s home match against Punjab Kings on March 25th. He blasted 77 off 49, completing a century of 50-plus scores in the shorter format.

The T20 format has been known as the batters’ game and there have been some great players in just two decades of T20 cricket. The rise of franchise cricket has meant that players get to play plenty of T20 cricket and good batters get to pile on runs everywhere.

Today we take a look at most T20 fifties by a player, that is the number of innings where a batter has scored more than 50 runs, including hundreds.

Chris Gayle

The universe king Chris Gayle is arguably the best batter T20 cricket has seen. The brute force, intimidation, the consistency at which he destroyed the bowling attacks all around the globe, Gayle was just unique. He occupies the top spot on the list of most T20 fifties by a player with 110 scores of over fifty.

Gayle has the record for the most T20 centuries, having crossed the landmark on 22 occasions. The next best has half the number of hundreds. Gayle also hit 88 fifties in his T20 career.

David Warner

David Warner is amongst the top three batters in T20 cricket for the way he has batted the majority of his career and the impact he has had. The Australian batter sits second on this list with 109 fifty-plus scores. He has hit eight centuries and 109 half-centuries in his T20 career.

Warner’s consistency is so remarkable that he has just one less fifty-plus score than Gayle, having batted in 85 fewer innings. And he has some time to clinch this record to his name.

Virat Kohli

The Indian superstar might just be the best all-format batter of his generation and he has ridiculous numbers to back it up. Virat Kohli registered his 100th fifty-plus score in the recent IPL match. He has eight centuries and 92 half centuries from 361 innings in the shorter format. Kohli's T20 average of 42.26 is the second best amongst the top 10 batters with most T20 fifties.

Babar Azam

Babar Azam is fourth on the list with 98 fifties to his credit in the shorter format. He has done this in just 280 innings. The Pakistan star has been arguably the most consistent batter in the T20 format although his strike rate gets criticism just as frequently. His average of 44.28 is the highest among the batters with at least 20 fifty-plus scores. Babar has registered 11 centuries – the second most in T20 cricket history – and 87 half centuries.

Jos Buttler

Jos Buttler is one of the most dynamic batters of the 21st century. The English batter has torn apart the bowling attacks for fun at a great consistency. Buttler ranks fifth in the club of most T20 fifties by a player, having crossed the mark on 86 occasions. He has smashed six centuries in T20 cricket along with 80 half centuries from 381 innings. Buttler has done it at a career strike rate of 144.67.

Aaron Finch

The former T20 World Cup winning captain of Australia Aaron Finch has the sixth most T20 fifties. He has registered 85 scores of fifty or more runs from 380 innings. Finch struck eight centuries and 77 half centuries in his career. His 172 against Zimbabwe in 2018 is the second highest score in a T20 innings and the highest in international T20s.

Alex Hales

Alex Hales, who wasn't on good terms with the England cricket team for a few years, used his time to become one of the T20 globetrotters. Hales played in multiple leagues around the world and is fourth on the list of most T20 runs. Hales has registered 84 fifties in his career, with six centuries and 78 half centuries.

Shoaib Malik

The Pakistan veteran has been playing T20 cricket for 19 years and occupies the eighth place in the club of most T20 fifties by a player. Shoaib Malik has registered 83 fifties in his T20 career from 503 innings. He doesn't have a century to his name but his runs tally of 13360 is the second highest in T20 cricket.

Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma has had a mixed T20 career but is still one of the prolific batters of his time. He has registered 81 fifty-plus scores in the format from 414 innings. Rohit has seven centuries in the format, five of which have come in international T20s. He also has 74 half centuries in his T20 career.

AB de Villiers

There is a good enough argument for AB de Villiers being the best T20 batter ever. The man who has made a huge impact across three formats, has ridiculous numbers in T20 cricket while batting in the middle order. The South African batter is 10th on the list of most T20 fifties with 73 instances of crossing the 50-run mark. De Villiers hit four centuries and 69 half centuries in his career. His career strike rate of 150.13 is the best among batters with over 60 fifties.

A strong believer in the fact that Kohli and Paes are the greatest Indian superstars!
