The South Africa vs Sri Lanka result was not a surprise but no one expected it to break records like it did.
South Africa posted the highest team total in the history of the World Cup and then Sri Lanka did well to not lose by a massive margin. By the halfway mark in the chase, the result was known to many but credit to Sri Lanka for posting 326 runs.
It was the first match of the World Cup at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi and being the weekend, the stadium was nearly 80 percent full. As far as the match is concerned, South Africa won by 102 runs to get their tournament off to a cracking start.
Quinton de Kock, Rassie van der Dussen and Aiden Markram smashed centuries after Sri Lanka opted to bowl first. Their knocks including the fastest World Cup century by Markram ensured South Africa posted a mammoth total of 428 runs on the board in their 50 overs.
In response, Sri Lanka began aggressively in the chase courtesy of a special knock from Kusal Mendis. He scored 76 runs off 42 balls but once he was dismissed, Sri Lanka fell behind in the asking rate and despite fifties from Charith Asalanka and Dasun Shanaka, they were never in the hunt.
