Quinton de Kock, Rassie van der Dussen and Aiden Markram smashed centuries after Sri Lanka opted to bowl first. Their knocks including the fastest World Cup century by Markram ensured South Africa posted a mammoth total of 428 runs on the board in their 50 overs.
In response, Sri Lanka began aggressively in the chase courtesy of a special knock from Kusal Mendis. He scored 76 runs off 42 balls but once he was dismissed, Sri Lanka fell behind in the asking rate and despite fifties from Charith Asalanka and Dasun Shanaka, they were never in the hunt.

South Africa’s innings: South Africa lost their skipper Temba Bavuma early. However, a double-century partnership between Rassie and De Kock set the platform perfectly for the batters to come. Markram then blazed the record-breaking century to power South Africa to 428 runs in 50 overs.
Sri Lanka’s chase: The target was always daunting for Sri Lanka but Kusal Mendis kept them in the hunt smashing 4 fours and 8 sixes during his 42-ball 76. But they lost steam soon. However, Shanaka and Asalanka’s half-centuries ensured they didn’t lose the match by a massive margin.
Records broken: It was the first time in the World Cup that three different batters scored a century in the same innings. A total of 754 runs were scored in the match which is also the most in World Cup history. A total of 105 boundaries (74 fours and 31 sixes) were hit, which is also the all-time World Cup record.
