Trinbago Knight Riders receive first red card for over-rate offence in CPL

Trinbago Knight Riders had to send Sunil Narine off the field in their match against St Kitts & Nevis Patriots in the CPL.

The league witnessed its first red card when Trinbago Knight Riders found themselves guilty of over-rate offence in their recent fixture against St Kitts & Nevis Patriots on Sunday.

Knight Riders were behind the required over rate at the start of each of their final three overs and were left with only 10 men for the final over, and just two fielders outside the 30-yard circle.

The CPL had introduced ‘a first in the game' ruling system in both men's and women's competition to combat the slow over-rates. As per the new rules, if the bowling team is behind the required rate at the start of the 18th over, only four fielders would be allowed outside the 30-yard circle.

If they do not start the 19th over on time, another fielder must come inside the circle. If the team falls behind the rate at the start of the final over, they would be forced to send a player off the field, with only two fielders outside the circle.

Knight Riders were found guilty for all three offences and they were made to pay for it as Patriots' Sherfane Rutherford took 18 runs off Dwayne Bravo in the final over.

Knight Riders did end up winning the match as Nicholas Pooran, Kieron Pollard and Andre Russell mowed down the 179-run target in 17.1 overs but the captain Pollard was furious with the rule. He had to ask Narine, who had finished his bowling quota with 3/24, to leave the field before the final over.

“To be honest, it will take away the hard work everyone has done,” Pollard said after the match. “We are like pawns and we are going to do what we are told. We are going to play as fast as we can. If you are penalised for 30-45 seconds in a tournament like this, it is absolutely ridiculous.”

What are the slow over-rate penalties in the CPL

  • If the bowling team is behind the required over rate at the start of the 18th over, only four fielders will be allowed outside the circle.
  • If the bowling team falls behind the rate at the start of the 19th over, two fielders must be brought in with only three fielders allowed outside the circle.
  • If the bowling team finds themselves behind the rate at the start of the 20th over, the team must send one player off the field – selected by the captain, with only two players allowed outside the fielding circle.
  • If the batting team is found to be wasting time, they will be given a first and final warning from the umpires. After which, they will be handed a five-run penalty for each instance of time wasting.
