SRH vs RR match preview

Sunrisers Hyderabad

After a campaign in 2022 which saw Sunrisers finish four points from the play off positions and four points above the bottom of the pile, marginal gains could make all the difference this time around. For this opening game, Marco Jansen, Heinrich Klaasen and captain Aiden Markram will all be absent due to the South Africa vs Netherlands ODI series. With the bat, many eyes will be on the middle-order batter, England’s Harry Brook, who has been in fantastic international form over the last seven months.

SRH possible 11: Abhishek Sharma, Mayank Agarwal, Rahul Tripathi, Harry Brook, Glenn Phillips (wk), Abdul Samad, Washington Sundar (c), Adil Rashid, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Umran Malik, T.Natarajan

Rajasthan Royals

Although they lost by seven wickets in the final last May, Rajasthan Royals will have taken great heart from reaching their first IPL final since 2008. Now the question is, can they go one step further this year? They certainly have the players to do so and there is every chance that they will get off to a winning start in this match. A key to their success across every game will be the form of England’s Jos Buttler at the top of the order.

After averaging between 32 – 38 in the three previous seasons, the top order batter hit 863 runs in the 2022 IPL, 247 runs more than his nearest challenger for the Orange Cap. With the ball, Yuzvendra Chahal ended the last campaign as the top wicket taker and we also expect Trent Boult, who no longer has a New Zealand central contract, to be a vital contributor with the ball.

RR possible 11: Jos Buttler, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Devdutt Padikkal, Sanju Samson (c) (wk), Riyan Parag, Shimron Hetmyer, Jason Holder, R.Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, Trent Boult, Kuldeep Sen

Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Rajasthan Royal match prediction

Pitch and expected weather conditions

Although it has never been one of the highest scoring pitches in the competition, the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium has seen the average total of first innings scores in T20s increase as the seasons have progressed. Spinners have an excellent record at this venue and our SRH vs RR prediction is that there will be plenty of turn from this surface.

With a late-afternoon start, we can expect sunny weather and very hot conditions throughout this match. The temperature will be over 30 degrees from start to finish.

Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Rajasthan Royals Dream11 prediction

Here are our picks and tips for your SRH vs RR Dream11 prediction:

  • Wicket keeper(s): Glenn Phillips, Sanju Samson
  • Batter(s): Jos Buttler, Harry Brook, Devdutt Padikkal
  • All-rounder(s): Washington Sundar, Jason Holder
  • Bowler(s): Adil Rashid, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Trent Boult
  • Recommended captain: Jos Buttler
  • Recommended vice-captain: Yuzvendra Chahal

Sanju Samson has played at least 11 IPL games in each season since 2013 and his returns with the bat have gradually grown. He has scored over 450 runs in both of the last two campaigns. The New Zealand keeper-batter, Glenn Phillips, has only played three IPL games but has far more talent than his highest score of 14 not out

Jos Buttler is simply one of the most consistent white-ball batters in world cricket. He has impressed for England in away series in South Africa and Bangladesh already this year and hit four hundreds alongside four half-centuries in the 2022 competition. Washington Sundar and Jason Holder both come into this game with points to prove. Both are top players but have lacked consistency over the last 12-18 months.

With 338 international wickets, it is somewhat of a mystery to why Adil Rashid has never appeared in the IPL before. We expect him to enjoy bowling on this surface and he could well run Yuzvendra Chahal close as the top spinner in the clash.

There are few more reliable players in T20 cricket than Jos Buttler and we recommend selecting him as your Dream XI captain in this match. And on this spinner-friendly surface, we have gone for Yuzvendra Chahal as vice-captain.

Match prediction: RR to win

We are not expecting a one-sided game but we are predicting Rajasthan Royals to have too much quality for Sunrisers Hyderabad on Sunday afternoon. Sunrisers will miss their South African trio in this game but we expect new head coach Brian Lara to inspire the other players. The Royals have quality throughout their team and came so close to winning the trophy last year so our Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Rajasthan Royals prediction is they will get off to a winning start in this fixture.

Toss prediction: Sunrisers Hyderabad to win the toss and choose to field

Due to Jos Buttler’s consistency at the top of the order for Rajasthan Royals, many opposition teams instinctively chose to bat first to prevent him batting them out of the game in the first half of the game. However, under Brian Lara’s captaincy, we can expect Sunrisers Hyderabad to back themselves to field first.

Man of the match prediction: Jos Buttler

We appreciate that we have made reference to him plenty of times already in this preview but his quality deserves it! Scoring 863 runs at a strike-rate of 149.05 was nothing short of extraordinary and, although it will be very tough for him to replicate this in the 2023 IPL, we are backing Buttler to be the top player in this game.

Betting odds

The bookies can not split Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals ahead of this game with both having odds of 10/11 (1.91) to get the victory in our SRH vs RR prediction. We conclude that the form coming into this tournament of Harry Brook is enough to make the bookmakers think he could be the difference in the match.
