England and Pakistan are set to lock horns on Saturday (November 11) at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. This is a must-win game for Pakistan given the improbable net run-rate that they have to cover. On the other hand, England are in the hunt to qualify for the Champions Trophy and a win should ensure a place in the top 8.
Pakistan’s campaign, at one stage, was going nowhere as they had lost four consecutive matches against India, Australia, Afghanistan and South Africa. They had started their World Cup with twin wins over the Netherlands and Sri Lanka and then defeated Bangladesh and New Zealand recently to stay alive in the tournament.
But New Zealand’s big win over Sri Lanka has made things extremely tough for them on Saturday.
As far as England is concerned, they never looked like defending their title in this World Cup and have already lost six out of eight matches so far. They won against Bangladesh and the Netherlands and lost to every other team they faced. Their place in the Champions Trophy is at stake now and will have to win against Pakistan on Saturday.
