Mumbai Indians vs Rajasthan Royals match preview

Mumbai Indians

MI, led by Rohit Sharma, are well and truly in a spot of bother. After initially losing two matches, the five-time champions made a stupendous comeback by winning three matches in a row. But losses in their previous two games again pushed them back. They are placed ninth in the table with six points and a net run rate of -0.620 thanks to wins in three out of seven matches.

They will go into the game against the Royals after losing to Hardik Pandya’s Gujarat Titans by 55 runs. After being put in to bat first, the Titans racked up a huge score of 207 for the loss of six wickets in 20 overs. Shubman Gill was their standout batter after he scored 56 runs off 34 balls with seven fours and a six.

Piyush Chawla picked up the wickets of Hardik and Vijay Shankar. Arjun Tendulkar, Jason Behrendorff, Riley Meredith and Kumar Kartikeya picked up one wicket apiece.

MI lost wickets at regular intervals in their run-chase and were restricted to 152 for nine in 20 overs. Nehal Wadhera top-scored for MI with a knock of 40 off 21 balls. Noor Ahmad and Rashid Khan picked up five wickets to choke the Mumbai batters.

MI possible XI: Rohit Sharma (c), Ishan Kishan (wk), Cameron Green, Suryakumar Yadav, Tim David, Nehal Wadhera, Kumar Kartikeya, Arjun Tendulkar, Riley Meredith, Piyush Chawla, Jason Behrendorff

Rajasthan Royals

The Royals, led by Sanju Samson, on the other hand, have been fairly consistent in the tournament. They are placed second in the table with 10 points and a net run rate of +0.939 courtesy of wins in five out of eight matches. They will go to the top of the points table, displacing the Titans, if they defeat Mumbai in their upcoming game.

Samson’s men will be high on confidence after beating the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 32 runs in their previous match. After opting to bat first, the Royals put up a challenging target of 203 for MS Dhoni’s men to chase down. Yashasvi Jaiswal played a brilliant knock after he scored 77 runs off 43 balls with the help of eight fours and four sixes.

Dhruv Jurel and Devdutt Padikkal scored 34 and 27 not out respectively to take the Royals past the 200-run mark. Thereafter, Adam Zampa’s three-wicket haul helped the Royals restrict their opponent to 170 for six. Ravi Ashwin also got the two crucial wickets of Ajinkya Rahane and Ambati Rayudu.

RR possible XI: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Jos Buttler, Devdutt Padikkal, Sanju Samson (c & wk), Shimron Hetmyer, Dhruv Jurel, Ravichandran Ashwin, Jason Holder, Adam Zampa, Sandeep Sharma, Yuzvendra Chahal

Match prediction: Rajasthan Royals to win

The Royals should win the upcoming game. They have looked pretty decent off late while MI have had their fair share of troubles.

Toss prediction: Rajasthan Royals to win the toss and bat first

The Royals should win the toss and opt to bat first. If RR manage to put up a score of above 200, it will put immense pressure on the MI batters in their run-chase.

Man of the match prediction: Jos Buttler

Jos Buttler has incredible numbers against the Mumbai Indians. The right-handed batter has scored 467 runs from seven innings at an average of 77.83 and a strike-rate of 155.67 with four half-centuries and a century to his name. If he gets going, MI will find themselves in a lot of trouble.

Betting Odds

  • Mumbai Indians: 2.005
  • Rajasthan Royals: 1.805

The bookies feel that the Royals are favourites to win the upcoming game, which is what we also think. But one should not undermine MI since they are playing at their home venue.
