Rajasthan Royals vs Chennai Super Kings match preview

Rajasthan Royals

The Royals, led by Sanju Samson, are currently placed third in the table with eight points and a net run rate of +0.844 courtesy of four wins from seven matches. They won three matches in a row against Delhi Capitals (DC), Gujarat Titans (GT) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

But they lost their previous two matches at the hands of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). In both games, they came close to chasing down targets, but somehow failed to go past the finish line.

Against RCB, the Royals were asked to track down 190. After Jos Buttler perished for a duck, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Devdutt Padikkal put on 98 runs for the second wicket. But after David Willey dismissed Padikkal, the Royals lost their way big time.

Dhruv Jurel threw his bat around to stay unbeaten on 34 off 16 balls with two fours and as many sixes. But his efforts could not pay dividends. Earlier, after the Royals elected to field first, Yuzvendra Chahal was the pick of their bowlers with figures of 4-0-28-1.

Trent Boult and Sandeep Sharma picked up two wickets apiece, but they conceded 90 runs in eight overs.

RR possible XI: Jos Buttler, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson (c & wk), Devdutt Padikkal, Shimron Hetmyer, Dhruv Jurel, Ravichandran Ashwin, Jason Holder, Trent Boult, Sandeep Sharma, Yuzvendra Chahal, Abdul Basith

Chennai Super Kings

The Super Kings, captained by MS Dhoni, went to the top of the table after beating Nitish Rana’s Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by 49 runs at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. They have 10 points and a net run rate of +0.662 thanks to wins in five out of seven matches.

They have won three matches in a row and must be high on confidence. The Super Kings, however, will be looking to make amends after losing to the Royals the last time around at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Against the Knight Riders, the Super Kings looked at their very best. After being sent in to bat first, CSK racked up a huge score of 235 for the loss of four wickets in 20 overs. Devon Conway laid the platform for CSK by racking up 56 runs off 40 balls.

Thereafter, Ajinkya Rahane’s unbeaten 71 and Shivam Dube’s 50 took the Super Kings well past the 200-run mark. Ravindra Jadeja came out and hit two sixes.

The CSK bowlers picked up early wickets to push KKR on the backfoot right from the word go, Tushar Deshpande and Maheesh Theekshana picked up two wickets apiece. Moeen Ali, Akash Singh, Matheesha Pathirana and Jadeja got one wicket apiece.

CSK possible XI: Ruturaj Gaikwad, Devon Conway, Ajinkya Rahane, Moeen Ali, Ambati Rayudu, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni (c & wk), Matheesha Pathirana, Tushar Deshpande, Maheesh Theekshana

Match prediction: Chennai Super Kings to win

The Super Kings and the Royals have had contrasting fortunes in recent times. While CSK have won three on the bounce, RR have lost two in a row. CSK almost came close to beating the Royals last time around, but failed. This time, MS Dhoni and Co should go past the finish line.

Toss prediction: Chennai Super Kings to win the toss and field first

The Super Kings should opt to field first after winning the toss. Their batters are in excellent form and should be able to chase down targets.

Man of the match prediction: Devon Conway

Devon Conway has arguably been the standout batter for the Super Kings in IPL 2023. He is second in the list of leading run-scorers of the tournament, having notched 314 runs from seven matches at an average of 52.33 and a strike-rate of 143.38.

Betting Odds

  • Chennai Super Kings: 1.900
  • Rajasthan Royals: 1.900

The bookmakers reckon that there is absolutely nothing to differentiate the two teams. But we think that CSK have a better chance of winning given their recent form.
