They will look to capitalise on the home advantage during the World Cup this year. Their opening match is against New Zealand on October 22 at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Before that, the Australian side will play three T20Is in India and face the West Indies, England, and India.
The squad relies on the experience of captain Aaron Finch and David Warner, along with an in-form Matthew Wade. Aussies will rely on the pace battery of Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc. Leg-spinner Adam Zampa will also play a key role.
Australia squad: Aaron Finch (c), Ashton Agar, Pat Cummins, Tim David, Josh Hazlewood, Josh Inglis, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Kane Richardson, Steven Smith, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, Matthew Wade, David Warner, Adam Zampa.
Key player: Singapore-born Tim David has been added as an explosive hitter. The all-rounder grabbed the headlines when he was picked by the Mumbai Indians in this year’s IPL.
Team India
India is hoping that their dry spell of world titles will end in Rohit Sharma’s captaincy. India won the inaugural world title but hasn’t been able to replicate that success. India exited last year’s tournament at the group stage, with defeats to arch-rivals Pakistan and New Zealand.
India then entered the Asia Cup with a consistent run of results. They whitewashed West Indies (3-0) and Sri Lanka (3-0) at home and drew with South Africa (2-2). Then they registered series wins in Ireland (2-0), England (2-1) and West Indies (4-1). But failure to reach the Asia Cup final has again hurt India’s momentum.
India would rely on their bowlers to bring the goods. Spinners R Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Axar Patel can be difficult to put away on the large Aussie grounds, Death overs specialist Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel, and Arshdeep Singh will also stem the run flow.
On the batting front, India would hope for captain Rohit to lead from the front.
India squad: Rohit Sharma (c), KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Deepak Hooda, Rishabh Pant, Dinesh Karthik, Hardik Pandya, R Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel, Arshdeep Singh.
Standby Players: Mohammad Shami, Shreyas Iyer, Ravi Bishnoi, Deepak Chahar.
Key player: He has been facing questions over his form, but Virat Kohli answered the critics with a sensational century in the Asia Cup. His 61-ball unbeaten 122 is the highest score by an Indian in T20Is. Kohli’s past record in Australia could make him the main man for India again.
Team England
England was arguably the in-form team at the tournament last year. They defeated West Indies, Bangladesh, Australia, and Sri Lanka to secure the semifinal qualification. There they lost to New Zealand despite putting an imposing target of 167 on the board.
Since then, England has lost bilateral series to West Indies, India, and South Africa. Their charismatic leader Eoin Morgan also announced his retirement, leaving wicketkeeper Jos Buttler to take the reins. The biggest selection news comes in the form of explosive opener Jason Roy being dropped.
Pacers Mark Wood and Chris Woakes, however, will bolster the squad with their return. Other seamers in the squad, Sam Curran, Reece Topley, David Willey, Chris Jordan and Ben Stokes, will back them up. England will open their campaign against Afghanistan on October 22.
England squad: Jos Buttler (c), Moeen Ali, Harry Brook, Sam Curran, Chris Jordan, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Ben Stokes, Reece Topley, David Willey, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood, Alex Hales.
Standby Players: Liam Dawson, Richard Gleeson, Tymal Mills.
Key player: Alex Hales was roped into the squad after star batter Jonny Bairstow injured himself playing golf. While Hales hasn’t been a regular in the squad, he has proven his hitting in Australia’s Big Bash League. He has an average of 33.16 from 60 innings in BBL.
Team Pakistan
Despite not winning titles lately, Pakistan is the in-form team going into the T20 World Cup 2022. They had an excellent T20 World Cup 2021, winning all five group games against India, New Zealand, Afghanistan, Scotland, and Namibia. In the semifinals, they lost to Australia.
In 2022, they played and lost only one T20I game. But in UAE, Pakistan roared into form at the 2022 Asia Cup. After losing a high-octane game to India, they bounced back and defeated the arch-rivals and marched into the finals before losing to Sri Lanka.

There were concerns over the form of captain and star batsman Babar Azam. He scored only 68 runs at the Asia Cup but slammed a 62-ball century against England to signal a return to runs. Shaheen Afridi is back from injury and will share the pace duties with tearaway Naseem Shah.
Pakistan squad: Babar Azam (c), Shadab Khan, Asif Ali, Haider Ali, Haris Rauf, Iftikhar Ahmed, Khushdil Shah, Mohammad Hasnain, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Rizwan, Mohammad Wasim, Naseem Shah, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Shan Masood, Usman Qadir.
Standby Players: Fakhar Zaman, Mohammad Haris, Shahnawaz Dahani.
Key player: Mohammad Rizwan is undoubtedly the main man for Pakistan. The keeper-batsman has a stellar average of 51.13 at an average of 127.07. He not only opens the batting and gives quick starts, but also anchors the chases.
First Semi-Final – New Zealand vs Pakistan
Pakistan were able to get a very comfortable success over New Zealand to put themselves in the final of the T20 World Cup. Pakistan came into the game with a mediocre set of form in the early rounds. However, everything about the semi-final fell into place for Pakistan, who were able to get a first wicket through Shaheen Afridi in his first over. From there, it was downhill for New Zealand, who ended up failing to make an impact in the different stages of the game. Pakistan were so impressive with their seamers towards the end that they ended up conceding only 53 runs in the last 36 balls.
After having excelled with the ball, it was time for the batsmen to come good in the second innings. The old guard of Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam came good when it mattered the most. The former came in with an impressive 57 out of just 43 balls, while the latter was able to get 53 runs in 42 balls. Finally, Mohammad Haris was also able to chip in with a decent cameo of 30 runs from just 26 balls. There was very little impact from the New Zealand bowlers in the game as Pakistan were able to comfortably achieve success with seven wickets and five balls left.
This appeared to be unimaginable not too long ago with Australia coming into the World Cup as the favourites. However, Australia were unable to even advance into the knockout stages after falling behind New Zealand and Pakistan in the group owing to a poor run rate. The recent successes of Pakistan mean that they will be quite a handful for the winner of the semi-final between India and England. The stage is to be set for a brilliant final of the T20 World Cup 2022.
Second Semi-final – India vs England
England were able to get the basics right in the second semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2022. They were able to overcome India with a comfortable 10 wicket victory. Send in to bat first, India were only able to post a modest total of 168 for six wickets. England were able to produce a strong performance up until the final overs, as India were limited to just two sixes for long periods. In their batting innings, England were able to start spectacularly well with the power play yielding a lot of boundaries. In just six overs, England were able to post a total of 63 as the partnership of Josh Buttler and Alex Hales came good.
India were relatively confident about eliminating the threat of Josh Buttler through Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who has been able to get the scoop on five occasions in just 32 deliveries in the T20I game. It was a painful day for the Indian bowlers, who were unable to get any wickets and were thrashed all over the park. One of the few advantages in the semi-final for India would be the 40-ball half-century for Virat Kohli while Hardik Pandya was able to hit 63 from his 33 deliveries.
Hales required just 47 deliveries to hit his 86 runs while Buttler was able to manage 80 from just 49 balls. The major disappointments for India where the performances of KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav.
The manner in which England were able to dispatch India is likely to give them plenty of confidence going into the final against Pakistan. Even though both teams finished in the second position of their respective Super 12 groups, they have made it to the final against the odds. This will be the first World Cup final meeting between the two teams since 1992.
