Back in 1845, the venue became the home of Surrey County Cricket Club.

In September 1880, England and Australia played the first-ever Test match at the Kennington Oval. England won the match by five wickets. After opting to bat first, the hosts scored 420 in 210.3 overs. WG Grace scored 152 runs off 294 balls with the help of 12 fours.

Alec Bannerman and William Moule picked up three wickets apiece. Australia had a horrendous time in their first innings as they were bowled out for 149 in 75.1 overs. Fred Morley was the pick of the bowlers for England after he finished with figures of 32-9-56-5. England also amassed a lead of 271 runs after the end of the first innings.

After being asked to follow on, Australia scored 327 in 176.3 overs. Skipper Billy Murdoch was stupendous after he scored 153 runs off 358 balls to stay unbeaten. Chasing a target of 57, England found themselves in trouble before they got home in 33.5 overs.

England and the West Indies played the second-ever ODI at the Kennington Oval on September 7, 1973. West Indies, captained by Rohan Kanhai, won the match by eight wickets with 78 balls left. After opting to bat first, England scored 189 for the loss of nine wickets.

Keith Fletcher was the star batter for the hosts after he scored 63 runs off 80 balls with six fours. West Indies chased down the target in 42.2 overs after opening batter Roy Fredericks scored 105 runs off 122 balls with 10 fours and a six. Fletcher and Alvin Kallicahrran put on 143 runs for the second wicket.  

As per Kennington Oval Cricket Ground records, West Indies and England locked horns in the first-ever T20I at the venue on June 28, 2007. The visitors won the match by 15 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. Although he ended on the losing side, Paul Collingwood won the award for the Player of the Match.

After opting to bat first, West Indies racked up a huge score of 208 for the loss of eight wickets. Devon Smith threw his bat around to score 61 runs off 34 balls with seven fours and three sixes. Marlon Samuels also 51 runs off 26 balls with three fours and four sixes. Shivnarine Chanderpaul was also impressive, having scored 41 off 26 with six fours.

James Anderson and Dimitri Mascarenhas picked up two wickets apiece, but both leaked runs at over nine runs an over. England found themselves in trouble after being reduced to 101 for six in 12.2 overs. Just when it seemed the West Indies would win the match at a canter, Collingwood started scripting a fightback.

Skipper Collingwood scored 79 runs off 41 balls with five fours and four sixes before getting run out in the penultimate ball of the English innings. He was also involved in a partnership of 91 runs for the seventh wicket with Michael Yardy.

Kennington Oval Cricket Ground last match in Test, ODI and T20I 

Australia and India last played a Test at the Kennington Oval back in June 2023. It also happened to be the final of the World Test Championship (WTC) final for the 2021-23 cycle. Australia, led by Pat Cummins, won the match by 209 runs.

After being put in to bat first, Aussies scored 469 in 121.3 overs. Steve Smith and Travis Head put on 285 runs for the fourth wicket to put their team in a position of command. Smith scored 121 runs off 268 balls with 19 fours before Shardul Thakur castled him. Head was the pick of the batters for the Aussies after he raced his way to scoring 163 runs off 174 balls with the help of 25 fours and a six.

Later, Alex Carey scored 48 runs off 69 balls with seven fours and a six. Mohammed Siraj was the pick of the Indian bowlers after he picked up four wickets. Thakur and Mohammed Shami got one wicket apiece. India stuttered in their first innings and were bowled out for 296 in 69.4 overs.

Ajinkya Rahane scored 89 runs on his comeback and he was well supported by Thakur, who made 51 vital runs off 109 balls with six fours. Cummins picked up three wickets as Australia garnered a lead of 173 runs. The Aussies declared their innings at 270 for eight in the second innings after Carey played a gutsy knock of 66 off 105 with eight fours.

Chasing 444, India had a number of their batters, who got starts, but none of them were able to get big scores. Nathan Lyon, who recently achieved the milestone of playing 100 Tests in a row, picked up four wickets as India were bowled out for 234 in the fourth innings.

England and India played the last ODI at the Kennington Oval back on July 2022. India won the match by 10 wickets with 188 balls left in their innings. After electing to field first, the Men in Blue bowled the hosts out for 110 in 25.2 overs.

Jasprit Bumrah was simply unplayable after he picked up six wickets and gave away only 19 runs in 7.2 overs. Shami was also impressive after he picked up three wickets for 31 runs. Jos Buttler looked like the only batter who was seeming to get the better of the Indian bowlers.

He scored 30 runs off 32 balls with six fours before Shami accounted for his crucial scalp. India chased down the target in 18.4 overs after skipper Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan put on an unbeaten partnership of 114 for the opening wicket.

Rohit was brutal in his stroke play, scoring 76 runs off 58 balls with seven fours and five sixes. Dhawan was a tad circumspect after he scored 31 runs off 54 balls with four fours.

Sri Lanka and England played the last T20I at the venue way back on May 20, 2014 as per Kennington Oval Cricket Ground Records. Sri Lanka won the match by nine runs with Thisara Perera winning the Player of the Match award. After being put in to bat first, Sri Lanka put up a decent score of 183 for the loss of seven wickets in 20 overs.

Perera played an excellent knock of 49 runs off 20 balls while batting at No.7 with the help of seven fours and two sixes. Kithruwan Vithanage and Lahiru Thirimanne scored 38 and 40 runs respectively.  Harry Gurney picked up two wickets for 26 runs and was the pick of the bowlers for England.

Alex Hales scored 66 runs off 41 balls with seven fours and two sixes, but his efforts went in vain. Jos Buttler also tried his heart out by scoring 26 runs off 16 balls with four fours. Lasith Malinga finished with figures of 4-0-28-3 as Sri Lanka made sure of restricting England from reaching the target.

Highest team score at Kennington Oval Cricket Ground

Back in 1938, England racked up the highest score in Test cricket at the Kennington Oval. After opting to bat first, Wally Hammond’s England scored 903 for the loss of seven wickets in 335.2 overs.

Opening batter Leonard Hutton was stupendous as her scored 364 runs off 847 balls with 35 fours. Australia could only score 201 and 121, respectively as they lost the match by an innings and 579 runs. Bill Bowes picked up five wickets for England in the first innings.

On June 12, 2015, New Zealand scored 398 for the loss of five wickets against England at the venue. After opting to bat first, the Black Caps scored 398 for the loss of five wickets in 50 overs. Ross Taylor stayed unbeaten on 119 off 96 balls with 10 fours and four sixes. Kane Williamson also scored 93 runs off 88 balls.

South Africa hold the record for the highest score at the Kennington Oval in T20Is. During the 2009 World T20, the Proteas scored 211 for the loss of five wickets in 20 overs. AB de Villiers was the star of the show after he scored 79 runs off 34 balls with five fours and six sixes. South Africa went on to win the match by 130 runs.

Lowest team score at Kennington Oval Cricket Ground

Australia were bowled out for 44 at the venue as per Kennington Oval Cricket Ground Records. England went on to win the Test match by 66 runs. Jack Hearne picked up six wickets in the first innings, after which Bobby Peel accounted for six scalps in the second.

In the 1999 World Cup, England registered the lowest score of 103 at the venue in London. Alec Stewart’s men lost the match by 122 runs after failing to chase down 226. Lance Klusener became the Player of the Match.

During the 2009 World T20, Scotland registered the lowest score of 81 at the venue. Gavin Hamilton’s men lost to Graeme Smith’s South Africa by 130 runs.

Highest run chase at Kennington Oval Cricket Ground

In August 1902, England recorded the highest successful run-chase at the Kennington Oval. The match was an absolute thriller as the hosts won the match by one wicket. England scored 263 for the loss of nine wickets in 66.5 overs after Gilbert Jessop scored 104 runs with 17 fours.

In the 2017 Champions Trophy, Sri Lanka recorded the highest successful run-chase at the Kennington Oval. Sri Lanka won the match by seven wickets after they chased down 322 with eight balls to spare. Kusal Mendis became the Player of the Match after he scored 89 runs off 93 balls with 11 fours and a six.
