Indian cricket has been a witness to several matches that went right down to the wire and every Super Over India played turned out to be exciting games. Among them, some of the games went to the Super Over after 40 overs were not enough to decide a winner.

The Indian men’s team has played in 3 Super Overs since they started playing T20Is in 2006. Even India Women, currently led by Harmanpreet Kaur, have played one Super Over. Most of the Super Over India played have been thrilling games that enchanted the fans. Here we take a look at each of the Super Over India have played in the shortest format of the game

Every Super Over India played in T20Is

India vs New Zealand, 2020, Hamilton

Back on January 29, 2020, India and New Zealand locked horns in a thrilling encounter at Seddon Park in Hamilton. After being put in to bat first, the visitors, led by Virat Kohli, put up a decent score of 179 for 5 on the board. Current skipper Rohit Sharma was India’s standout batter after he notched 65 runs off 40 balls with the help of 6 fours and 3 sixes.

Rohit and KL Rahul laid the platform in the Indian innings with a partnership of 89 runs for the opening wicket off nine overs. Kohli also made 38 runs off 27 balls. Hamish Bennett got the wickets of Rohit, Shivam Dube and Kohli, but leaked runs at an economy rate of 13.50. Ish Sodhi could not make a breakthrough, but kept the opposition batters in check with figures of 4-0-23-0.

New Zealand managed to take the match into the Super Over, but it would not have been possible had their skipper Kane Williamson not stood up. Williamson scored 95 runs off 48 balls with 8 fours and 6 sixes. Martin Guptill and Ross Taylor scored 31 and 17 respectively in quick time.

In the Super Over, Guptill and Williamson helped the Kiwis score 17 runs off Jasprit Bumrah. With the target down to 10 off 2 balls, Rohit hit Tim Southee for 2 sixes in a row to seal the deal for India.

India vs New Zealand, 2020, Wellington

2 days later, India and New Zealand were again involved in a match that went down to the Super Over, this time at the Westpac Stadium in Wellington. After being sent in to bat, India scored 165 for 8. Rohit Sharma gave them a brisk start with a knock of 39 off 26, laced with 3 fours and 2 sixes.

But it was Manish Pandey’s knock that guided the Men in Blue through to a decent score. Pandey scored 50 runs off 36 balls with 3 fours and stayed not out until the very end. Ish Sodhi was the standout Black Caps’ bowler after he finished with figures of 4-0-26-3.

The Kiwis took the match into the Super Over after Colin Munro and Tim Seifert made 64 and 57 respectively. Shardul Thakur was the standout Indian bowler after he got 2 crucial wickets of Ross Taylor and Daryl Mitchell.

In the Super Over, Seifert and Munro scored 13 runs off Jasprit Bumrah. KL Rahul started with a six and a four, taking India closer to victory. He got out to Southee in the third ball. In the end, Kohli creamed Southee through mid-wicket for a four to bring the curtains down on the match. This was a memorable Super Over India were involved in.

India vs Afghanistan, 2024, Bengaluru

This was probably the best Super Over India were involved in. On January 17, India and Afghanistan played in a T20I at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore that witnessed 2 Super Overs. After the hosts opted to bat first, they were reduced to 22 for 4 in 4.3 overs. From there on, Rohit Sharma and Rinku Singh put on 190 runs for the fifth wicket, helping India score 212 for 4.

Rohit got to his 5th T20I hundred off 64 balls and went on to stay not out on 121 runs off 69 balls with the help of 11 fours and 8 sixes. Rinku was stupendous as well after he racked up 69 runs off 39 balls with 2 fours and 6 sixes.

Fareed Ahmad was the pick of the bowlers for Afghanistan as he picked up the wickets of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli and Shivam Dube to finish with figures of 4-0-20-3.

Thereafter, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran and Gulbadin Naib made 50, 50 and 55 respectively to take the match into the Super Over. Mohammad Nabi also played a handy knock of 34 runs off 16 balls with 2 fours and 3 sixes.

In the first Super Over, Afghanistan scored 16 after Gurbaz and Nabi took the attack to Mukesh Kumar. Rohit hit 2 sixes, but could only take the match into the 2nd Super Over.

In the second Super Over India had to bat first, and Rohit hit Fareed Ahmad for 2 sixes to make sure that India scored 11 runs. Thereafter, Ravi Bishnoi dismissed Nabi and Gurbaz to guide India to victory in the thrilling contest. For the first time, a Super Over India were involved in led to another Super Over and it turned out to be a humdinger.

India Women vs Australia Women, 2022, Navi Mumbai

Back on December 11, 2022, India Women and Australia Women were involved in a thrilling contest that went into the Super Over. It was the first Super Over India were involved in that had the women's team. After being asked to bat first, Australia scored 187 for 1 in 20 overs. Beth Mooney and Tahlia McGrath put on 158 runs for the 2nd second wicket.

Mooney was the more aggressive off the two after she scored 82 runs off 54 balls with 13 fours. McGrath also did her bit by scoring 70 runs off 51 balls with 10 fours and 1 six. Deepti Sharma was the standout Indian bowler with figures of 4-0-31-0.

Chasing the target, India got off to a flier courtesy of a 76-run stand for the opening wicket between Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana. Shafali scored 34 runs while Mandhana raced to scoring 79 off 49 with 9 fours and 4 sixes.

Thereafter, Richa Ghosh scored an unbeaten 26 off 13 to take the match into the Super Over. Heather Graham was the star bowler for Australia after he finished with decent figures of 4-0-22-3.

In the one-over eliminator, Richa and Mandhana took on Heather Graham as India scored 20. Renuka Singh gave away 16 runs, but took India past the finish line in the thrilling contest.

Among the Super Over India were involved in T20Is, this was the only one involving the India women's team.
