Kane Williamson centuries in international cricket: ODI, T20I and Tests

New Zealand's Kane Williamson hails from a family boasting a rich sports background. Initially, the Tauranga native embraced cricket more as a hobby at first.

Quickly, the sport grew into his long-term passion – and quite a successful one at that, with the list of Kane Williamson centuries growing every year.

Williamson bats right-handed in the top order and has become a pillar of the New Zealand side since he made his debut in 2010. The 33-year-old is also revered as one of the game's most-loved global figures for his courteous, humble attitude on the field as well as off the field.

At the crease, Williamson comfortably tackles pace and spin at ease, while trusting his coaching manual explicitly, regardless of the rapid evolution of batting in the T20 era.

Among the best Kane Williamson centuries is his maiden Test double ton in January 2015, which helped New Zealand stage an unlikely recovery to beat Sri Lanka in Wellington.

Williamson is also a very accomplished player in the shortest format of the game and has a reputation for scoring at a brisk rate.

Playing for Northern Knights, Williamson has a domestic T20 hundred and has become the quickest Kiwi batsman and fifth overall, to reach 3000 ODI runs. For a degree of his consistency, he has streaks of five or greater successive fifty-plus rankings in ODIs in 20 months post-2014.

Considering his mental strength as a potential future leader, Williamson was an automatic choice over Brendon McCullum who took over the captaincy at the World T20 in 2016. As his batting continued to flourish over the years, his captaincy abilities helped the Kiwis soar to new heights.

Williamson has joined the Black Caps ahead of the 2023 World Cup and will lead them from the front. His participation in the ongoing World Cup edition was in jeopardy after he suffered a horrible leg injury earlier this year in an IPL match.

After waiting on the sidelines for several months, Kane recovered well in time and is expected to hit the ground running in this year’s World Cup tournament.

However, he suffered a thumb injury early on in the tournament and only returned to action against Pakistan on November 4, 2023.

On that note, let us dive in to examine all the Kane Williamson centuries in international cricket and his journey to the top.

The second-best of the Kane Williamson centuries was an ODI innings against Pakistan in the 4th ODI match of a five-match ODI series in 2014. Williamson’s powerful knock (123 off 105) helped New Zealand reach 299 in the first innings.

On the back of his valuable ton, the Black Caps were able to steal a victory by a very narrow margin of 7 runs.

Another gritty knock of 145* (136) against South Africa in 2013 helped him establish himself as a premium top-order batsman. Williamson was able to drag the Black Caps single-handedly to a respectable first-innings score of 279.

On the back of some impressive bowling in the second innings, New Zealand went on to win that game by a comfortable margin of 27 runs.

Kane Williamson T20I centuries

Williamson is a highly innovative cricketer but he currently has no T20I centuries under his belt. However, the majestic cricketer has come close to his maiden T20I century during New Zealand’s 3rd T20I clash against India which ended in an intense super over drama. In that match, Kane scored an unbeaten 95 but failed to get his side over the line. Additionally, Williamson has 17 fifties in this format.

Kane Williamson Test centuries

Williamson has a test century against all full member nations, excluding Afghanistan. Overall, the 33-year-old has 28 centuries in this format. Most of his centuries came against Pakistan and Sri Lanka. It is worth noting that the Kane Williamson centuries record at home is incredible as he has scored 16 out of 28 centuries on home soil. Furthermore, the 33-year-old has scored four double tons in this format.

Kane recorded his first-ever test double ton in emphatic style against Sri Lanka in 2015. Kane’s 242* helped New Zealand make a comeback into the test match.

He partnered with BJ Watling to record a 365-run stand that turned out to be the highest sixth-wicket stand ever recorded in test cricket. New Zealand were able to set up a stiff target of 390 and Sri Lanka were bowled out for 196.

Williamson’s second double ton against Sri Lanka also came in a match-winning cause earlier this year. New Zealand were leading the series by 1-0 and were looking to finish the series on a high.

Williamson smashed 215 (296) and was well-supported by Nicholls who also scored a double ton to take New Zealand to a commanding total of 580. Sri Lanka eventually crumbled under scoreboard pressure and lost the game by an innings and 58 runs.

At the end of 2020, Kane was at his fluent best when West Indies toured New Zealand in a two-match test series. During the first test match, New Zealand were able to get to a strong total of 519/7 on the back of an impressive double ton from Kane who had scored 251 (412).

In reply, West Indies were of no match with the bat as they failed to surpass New Zealand’s daunting first-innings score in two completed innings.

Kane Williamson centuries: Near misses

The Kane Williamson centuries list would have been more extensive had he not missed out under unfortunate circumstances. One of the most agonizing moments came in a test match between New Zealand and Australia at Christchurch in 2016.

Williamson was batting at 97 in the second innings and looked well on track to get to his ton. But Jackson Bird was introduced later who cleaned him up with an absolute jaffa.

He missed out on his well-deserved maiden T20I ton against India in 2020. Williamson played a blinder of an innings and scored 95 to bring his team very close to the finishing line.

However, upon his dismissal, New Zealand lost their way and the game went into the super over which ended on a disappointing note for them.
