Most ODI double hundreds: List of every batter to score 200

Pathum Nissanka joined the elite list of batters to score ODI 200 on Friday, February 9th and here's the list of batters with most ODI double hundreds. Double hundreds in the fifty-over format have become more frequent in recent years, thanks to the rise of T20 cricket and batters getting increasingly better at power-hitting.

The first-ever double hundred in men's ODIs was recorded by Sachin Tendulkar in 2010 and since then several batters have followed suit. There have been a total of 12 ODI double hundreds, of which seven were scored by Indian batters. Today we take a look at the list of batters with the most ODI double hundreds.

‘The Hitman’ Rohit Sharma is the only batter in the history of ODI cricket to have scored multiple double hundreds and holds the record for most ODI double hundreds. The current Indian captain also holds the record for the highest score in an innings in ODI cricket, having smashed 264 not-out versus Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens in 2014.

Rohit Sharma registered his first ODI 200 in November 2013 in the seven-match series decider against Australia at M Chinnaswamy Stadium. He hit 209 in 158 deliveries, with 16 maximums and 12 fours. In his record 264 knock, Sharma smashed 33 fours and nine sixes. Rohit's third double-hundred came in 2017 when he hammered 208 not out against Sri Lanka in Mohali.

Martin Guptill

Martin Guptill has the second-highest score among the batters to score an ODI 200 in cricket history. The New Zealand opener obliterated the West Indies in their quarterfinal of the 2015 ODI World Cup. He struck 237 not-out in 163 balls at Wellington, with 24 hours and 11 sixes in the innings. He took 111 balls to reach the three figures before changing the gears to complete the next hundred in 41 deliveries. New Zealand posted 393 and clinched the game by 143 runs.

Virender Sehwag

Virender Sehwag, who had shared a long opening partnership with Tendulkar in ODIs, was the second man to join the company of batters to score an ODI 200. West Indies were on the receiving end of a Sehwag onslaught when India hosted them at Indore in December 2011. Known for his ability to smash the bowlers from the get-go, Sehwag annihilated the Windies bowlers on his way to a 69-ball century. He completed his double hundred in 140 balls and was dismissed on 219 as India amassed 418 in 50 overs.

Chris Gayle

‘The Universe Boss’ was the first non-Indian to join the list of batters to score an ODI 200. Chris Gayle achieved this feat during the 2015 World Cup in the match against Zimbabwe. Gayle hammered 215 off 147 deliveries at Canberra, with the knock including 16 sixes and 10 fours. He brought up his century off 105 balls and took only 33 more to complete the double hundred. West Indies posted 372 runs on the board and won the match by 73 runs and is on the list of most ODI double hundreds.

Fakhar Zaman

Fakhar Zaman remains the only Pakistan batter to have scored a double hundred in fifty-over cricket. He did that in the fourth ODI on Pakistan's tour of Zimbabwe at Bulawayo. Batting first, Pakistan's opening pair put on a massive partnership of 304 runs. Fakhar went on to smash an unbeaten 210 off 156 deliveries, including 24 fours and five sixes.

Ishan Kishan

Ishan Kishan became the fourth Indian batter to score a double hundred in ODI cricket. He blasted 210 in 131 deliveries against Bangladesh at Chattogram in 2022. The left-hand batter completed his century in 85 balls and took 41 more to double it. Kishan hit 24 fours and 10 sixes in the innings to help India get 409 in 50 overs. Ishan holds the record for the fastest 200 in ODI cricket.

Pathum Nissanka

Pathum Nissanka is the latest entrant in the list of batters to score ODI 200. In the first ODI against Afghanistan at Pallekele, the Sri Lankan opener got off to a great start with a 31-ball fifty. Nissanka slowed down in the middle overs and brought up his century in 88 deliveries. He hit the accelerator at the back end of the innings, registering his double hundred in 136 balls and recently joined the list of most ODI double hundreds.

Shubman Gill

India's young batting star Shubman Gill had an excellent year 2022 in ODI cricket and he took his game to a next level in 2023. Batting first in the first ODI against New Zealand at Hyderabad, Shubman Gill held one end while none of the other batters could score 40. Gill reached his century in 87 deliveries and doubled it in the next 58 balls he faced. His 208 powered India to 349 as they clinched the game by 12 runs.

Glenn Maxwell

Among the batters to score ODI 200, this one by Glenn Maxwell might just be the most outrageous one. The knock came during the 2023 World Cup in a match against Afghanistan. Australia's semifinals spot was on the line and they were in a disastrous situation at 49/4 while chasing 292.

Wickets fell around him and they were 91/7 and on top of that, Maxwell could not run properly due to a hamstring injury in Mumbai's heat. But nothing could stop him as he kept producing jaw-dropping shots. He completed his century off 76 deliveries and took 52 more to reach the double hundred. Maxwell hit 21 fours and 10 sixes to power Australia to a victory.

Sachin Tendulkar

The God of cricket getting the maiden ODI 200 in men's cricket was poetic. Sachin Tendulkar achieved this record feat at the age of 37. An innings that resulted in ESPNcricinfo servers getting crashed due to never-seen-before traffic.

India batted first in the second ODI against South Africa at Gwalior and Tendulkar treated the crowd with a show to remember. He brought up his hundred off 90 deliveries and took 57 more to reach the 200 landmark. Tendulkar hit 25 fours and three sixes in his innings.
