Scott Boland Journey

Born on April 11, 1989, Scott Boland was brought up in Melbourne and played his first competitive game at the age of six for Parkdale Cricket Club. At the age of 16, Boland joined Frankston Peninsula club in the Victorian Premier Cricket.

Scott Boland didn't have a great first season at Frankston Peninsula cricket club but then produced multiple fruitful seasons during 2009-11, earning him a contract with the Victoria team. He made his first class debut in November 2011 against South Australia in the Sheffield Shield.

It took Boland a couple of years to start delivering more consistently for Victoria. He played nine matches in the 2013/14 Sheffield Shield season and picked 19 wickets. In the One-Day cup the same year, he picked nine wickets from six games and was Victoria's leading wicket-taker. The following season, Boland was even better in the Shield, picking 25 wickets in eight games at an average of 30.12. On the back of Boland's performance, Victoria claimed their first Shield title in four years.

The 2015-16 domestic season was enormous for Scott Boland's career as it caught the attention of national selectors. Boland claimed 33 wickets in the Shield season at 20.93 apiece to help Victoria win another title. The season also saw his career-best figures of 7/31 in FC cricket. Boland was awarded the Bill Lawry Medal at the end of the season as Victoria's best Sheffield Shield player.

Scotty Boland continued his rise in domestic cricket, becoming one of the stalwarts and adding to Scott Boland wickets tally. In 2018-19, he took 48 wickets in the Sheffield Shield at an incredible average of 19.66, including two five-wicket hauls. He was awarded with the Sheffield Shield player of the season.

Late Bloomer in International Cricket

Scott Boland made his international debut in January 2016 at the age of 26. He was picked to play in ODIs and T20Is against India in their tour of Australia. His debut did not go well as India smashed him for 74 runs in 10 runs without losing a wicket in the Perth ODI. Boland played three more games in the series but could only pick one wicket.

Boland did get a fairly consistent run in the ODI side, playing all of his 14 matches in the same year. But his returns weren't great, bagging only 16 runs while conceding at 6.07 rpo. He made his T20I during India's tour of Australia in 2016, where he played two games but couldn't buy a wicket.

Scott Boland then had to wait for a long time to represent Australia again. His opportunity came during the 2021-22 home Ashes when Josh Hazlewood got injured and Boland finally made his Test debut in the third Test at Melbourne.

The home-grown star destroyed England in the second innings of that Test with 6 for 7 and hasn't looked back. Boland played a key role in Australia winning the recent World Test Championship final against India, removing Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja in the same over.

Best performances: Test, ODI, T20I

The 34-yr old seamer has only played a handful of international matches for Australia but has still made a good impact. While his ODI and T20I career is pretty much forgettable, his late blooming Test career has some great moments.

One of those moments came on his debut at his home venue Melbourne Cricket Ground. Scott Boland only picked one wicket in the first innings as Australia bundled out England for 185. The hosts responded with 267 and had an 82-run lead. What followed was an absolute carnage from the local hero.

Boland made the most of whatever help was on offer with his impeccable line and length, and ran through the vulnerable English lineup. He bowled just four overs and claimed six wickets for seven runs. A remarkable effort helped Australia win the match by an innings and seal the series with an unassailable 3-0 lead. This remains his bowling performance in Test cricket.

Scott Boland's second best performance in Test cricket came in his second Test, in which he picked 7 for 66 at Sydney. He snared 4 for 36 in the first innings and followed it up with 3 for 30 in the second, adding some great scalps to the Scott Boland wickets collection.

Moving to ODI cricket, Scott Boland only picked three wickets in an innings only once. It came in an ODI versus South Africa at Centurion, where he bagged three scalps but was hammered for 67 in seven overs. The Proteas chased down 295 in just 36.2 overs in this game. Boland's best ODI performance was perhaps his 1/36 in 10 overs against Sri Lanka at Dambulla.

After going wicketless in his two T20I appearances, Boland received his third chance on the tour of Sri Lanka in 2016. He claimed 3 for 26 in the first T20I but did not feature in another T20I again.
