South Africa vs Netherlands: What happened in their last meeting?
These two teams last faced each other in a three-match series's third and final ODI. The game took place at the Johannesburg Stadium in South Africa on the 2nd of April, 2023.
The Netherlands won the toss and opted to field first in the game. Vivian Kingma gave the visitors an excellent start as he picked up the two early wickets of Quinton de Kock (8 off 19) and Temba Bavuma (6 off 12). South Africa were struggling at 32 for 2 in 7.2 overs when Rassie van der Dussen and Aiden Markram came together to stabilise the ship of the Proteas.
But just when it looked like the duo would take the game away from the Dutch, Aryan Dutt picked up the wicket of Van der Dussen (25 off 40) and gave the hosts another shock. Heinrich Klaasen came into the crease at this juncture and played aggressively, giving a bit of momentum to the innings. But Klaasen (28 off 21) also failed to convert the start.
South Africa were in a dubious situation at a score of 145 for four in the 26th over when David Miller walked out and joined hands with Aiden Markram. But Miller and Markram were at the epitome of their batting skills as they slaughtered the Dutch bowlers during an epic partnership of 199 runs of 117 deliveries.
By the time Markam's stay ended, he had already scored 175 runs off 126 deliveries with seven sixes and seventeen fours. Miller also played the best brand of counter-attacking cricket, although he failed to reach the three-figure mark, as he was dismissed in the 47th over when his score was 91 off 61 deliveries. Courtesy of the knocks by these two batters, South Africa, managed to post a mammoth total of 370 runs on the board in 50 overs for the loss of eight wickets.
The Dutch showed a fighting spirit as they got off to a decent start. Even though they lost Vikramjit Singh 21 off 18) early, Musa Ahmed (61 off 69) and Max O'Dowd (47 off 49) stitched an 85-run partnership and kept them in the game. However, after the dismissal of these two batters, the Dutch got off track and lost the plot completely.
Skipper Scott Edwards (42 off 33) tried to keep the chase alive but fell short of partners as the other batters succumbed under the scoreboard pressure. The Netherlands lost the last eight wickets for 73 runs and were bundled out for 224 runs in 39.1 overs.
Sisanda Magala, with his clever bowling, emerged as the destroyer of the Dutch batting lineup as he picked up five wickets for 43 runs in his 10-over spell. South Africa managed to win the match by a massive margin of 146 runs.
South Africa, at present, is in a destructive form, and they will look to repeat the antics from this game in the upcoming fixture. While the Netherlands will look to put up a better show and make the Proteas fight for their win till the last ball.
