Before the start of the Ashes 2023, the right arm seamer has played 339 matches for England across three formats and there are a total of 825 Stuart Broad wickets in international cricket. Broad has been the second most prolific seamer in Test cricket with 582 wickets from 162 matches at an average of 27.66.

Stuart Broad hasn't played any white-ball cricket even at domestic level since 2017 and moved his focus entirely to the longer format. Before the 2015 ODI World Cup debacle, he was a regular part of the England bowling attack. He played 121 ODIs and picked the 178 Stuart Broad wickets came at 30.13 apiece. In T20I cricket, Broad played 56 matches and picked 65 wickets at an economy of 7.62.

Stuart Broad Journey

Following his father Chris Broad's footsteps, Stuart Broad was an opening batter in his early years. But he quickly transformed himself into a medium pacer. He grabbed eyeballs with his time with England's Under-19 side and later made his England A debut in 2006.

In August 2006, Broad made his international debut in a T20I against Pakistan, where he picked 2 for 35. Two days later, he made his ODI debut against the same opposition, picking 1 for 14 in three overs before the match was called off due to rain.

Stuart Broad had to wait for more than a year for his Test debut, finally getting his opportunity on the tour of Sri Lanka. Broad was famously hit for six sixes in an over by Yuvraj Singh in the 2007 World T20 but his career only went upwards since then.

Stuart Broad had some good moments in the first couple of years but it was the 2009 Ashes when he truly came of age. He snared 6 for 91 in the fourth Test at Headingley, although England lost the match by an innings. The series was levelled heading into the final Test at the Oval and Broad delivered an outstanding performance. He claimed 5 for 37 in 12 overs as they bowled out the Aussies for 160 to take a 172-run lead in the first innings. England won the match eventually and clinched the Ashes.

Broad had his fair share of battles with injuries, missing out three Tests in the 2010-11 Ashes and later during the ODI World Cup. But he managed to bounce back and has kept himself in good shape for the majority of his career.

Carving out own legacy

Having James Anderson by his side, always meant Stuart Broad played in the shadow of the greatest bowler England ever had. But he still managed to create his own legacy with some incredible moments over the years.

Stuart Broad is known for his hot streaks. That is when he's on song, he could run through the entire line-ups in a single spell. He has several such spells, most famously his 8 for 15 against Australia at Trent Bridge. In 2011, he also claimed a hat-trick versus India at Trent Bridge in a spell where he picked 5 for 5.

Broad is currently fifth on the list of all-time leading wicket-takers in Tests, behind Muthiah Muralidaran (800), Shane Warne (708), James Anderson (685) and Anil Kumble (619).

Best performances: Test, ODI, T20I

Stuart Broad has a long list of great performances where he has changed matches on its head. His ability to run through the batting units brought him immense success in Test cricket in particular. Let's take a look at Stuart Broad's best performances in Test, ODI and T20I cricket.

Broad's best ever performance in an innings was the famous 8 for 15 in the 2015 Ashes. England were leading the series by 2-1 heading into this game at Trent Bridge. Bowling first, Broad delivered one of the greatest spells ever when he bulldozed through the Aussie line-up. Each of the Stuart Broad wickets were highlight-worthy deliveries. He bowled 9.3 overs and helped England bowl out the visitors for just 60 inside the morning session on day one. His ‘hands on mouth' gesture is one of the most iconic moments in the sport.

During the 2013 Ashes, Broad registered his career-best match figures of 11 for 121 at Chester-le-Street. The right arm seamer picked 5 for 71 in the first innings and followed it up with 6 for 50 in the second gig. England defended a target of 299 in the fourth innings and clinched the series with an unassailable 3-0 lead.

One of his other top performances in red-ball cricket came against West Indies in a series-deciding Manchester Test in 2020. Stuart Broad snared 6 for 31 in the first innings and 4 for 36 in the second as the hosts clinched the game by 269 runs.

Stuart Broad didn't have a remarkable ODI career but he had his moments. His career-best 5 for 23 against South Africa in 2008 was one of those moments. He bowled three maidens in his full quota of 10 overs and looked unplayable at Trent Bridge. South Africa were shot out for just 83 as England registered a 10-wicket victory. His second best ODI performance came at Chennai during the 2011 World Cup. He picked 4 for 15 in 6.4 overs, including the last two wickets to clinch the victory by six runs.

Stuart Broad's T20I career is more famous for getting hit for six sixes but he had a few good performances. In 2013, he picked 4 for 24 off four overs while defending 215 at Eden Park, Auckland, some of them top of the list in Stuart Broad wickets. In the same series, Broad picked 3 for 15 off four overs at Wellington as England went onto clinch the series by 2-1.
