Devon Conway blow for CSK ahead of IPL 2024

CSK have been struck by a significant setback just weeks before their title defence in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as New Zealand batsman Devon Conway is poised to be sidelined until at least May.

Conway, who played a pivotal role in CSK's triumph in the 2023 final against Gujarat Titans, will miss a considerable chunk of the upcoming tournament due to an impending surgery on his left thumb.

The blow comes after Conway sustained the injury during a recent T20I series against Australia, which also ruled him out of the opening Test match. Following medical advice, it was determined that surgery was necessary, setting his recovery time at a minimum of eight weeks.

With the IPL slated to commence on March 22 and likely conclude by the end of May, Conway is expected to miss more than half of the tournament.

What the absence of Devon Conway means for CSK for IPL 2024

As an integral part of CSK's top order alongside Ruturaj Gaikwad, Conway's absence leaves a void that the team will need to address promptly. In his place, CSK may turn to his compatriot and recent acquisition, Rachin Ravindra, to partner Gaikwad at the opening slot.

Conway's IPL journey began in 2022 when CSK secured his services at the Mega Auction for his base price of INR 1 crore. Over 23 appearances for the franchise, he amassed 924 runs at an impressive average of 48.63, including nine half-centuries. His standout performance came in the previous season, where he notched up 672 runs in 16 matches, embellished with six fifties.

Ravindra, who was acquired for INR 1.8 crore at the auction last December, caught the eye with his stellar display at the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup in India. Despite facing an injury scare during the T20I series against Australia, Ravindra managed to recover in time to feature in the first Test, where he showcased his prowess with a half-century in the second innings.

In light of Conway's absence, CSK will look to Ravindra to step up and fill the void at the top of the order, bolstering their batting lineup for the initial phase of the tournament.
