From Phil Salt to Jos Buttler: England players in IPL 2024

The 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is all set to get underway and here are the England players in IPL 2024.

The best cricketers from each team make themselves available, especially for the IPL which is why it is known as the best cricket league in the world. England are no different regarding their players featuring in the IPL every season. IPL 2024 is not an exception with as many as 12 players from the United Kingdom being spread across six teams. The number would’ve been even higher if not for the last-minute pullouts from Jason Roy, Gus Atkinson, Mark Wood and Harry Brook for different reasons.

The maximum representation of England players in IPL 2024 is in Punjab Kings while the star-studded Royal Challengers Bengaluru also have three English players in their squad. Two England cricketers are playing for Rajasthan Royals while three teams – Lucknow Super Giants, Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders – have only one cricketer each representing England.

Punjab Kings

As many as four England players in IPL 2024 are part of the Punjab Kings squad for IPL 2024. Jonny Bairstow was recently part of the Test series against India and has also committed his availability for the entire season which is a huge boost for the team. Liam Livingstone is another player from England who will play a crucial role in the middle order for Punjab. The swashbuckler strikes at 165.6 in 32 matches he has played in the IPL so far.

Sam Curran and Chris Woakes are the other two players in the PBKS squad for IPL 2024. Curran was picked by the franchise for Rs 18.5 crore in IPL 2023 and he even led them in a couple of matches last year. Curran’s all-round ability makes him a match-winner while Woakes is a decent player, especially in conditions where the new ball does its bit.

Lucknow Super Giants

Mark Wood pulled out of IPL 2024 with England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) managing his workload ahead of the T20 World Cup and international home summer. David Willey too is part of the squad but he too will miss at least the start of the season after being on the road since the start of the year playing in SA20 and Pakistan Super League (PSL). It is not yet known whether Willey will join the squad at some stage this season.

Mumbai Indians

Luke Wood is the only English player in IPL 2024 the Mumbai Indians squad and even he has been signed as a replacement for Jason Behrendorff who got ruled out due to injury. Wood is a left-arm pacer and is a like-for-like replacement for Behrendorff. Wood is coming off decent performances in T20 leagues. He played for Peshawar Zalmi in PSL recently and returned with 12 wickets in 11 matches. Overall, Wood has an experience of playing 140 T20 matches picking up 147 wickets.

Kolkata Knight Riders

Jason Roy was one batter who pulled out of IPL 2024 due to personal reasons. But KKR managed to sign an England player itself as his replacement – Phil Salt. A better batter in current form than Roy, Salt has scored twin half-centuries in the practice matches played before the tournament. He will open the innings mostly and is likely to be preferred ahead of Rahmanullah Gurbaz.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru

The WPL champions RCB are still hunting their maiden IPL trophy and in its quest, they have three English players in their squad – Will Jacks, Tom Curran and Reece Topley. However, only one of them – Topley- seems to have his place assured in the playing XI. With the likes of Faf du Plessis, Glenn Maxwell and Cameron Green set to play, there is a place for only one more overseas player to accommodate in the XI and that could be Topley who fared well last season before getting injured.

He is back though and will be expected to pick wickets. Jacks and Curran will come into the equation only if there are injuries to first-choice players.

Rajasthan Royals

Rajasthan Royals have had a history of signing a lot of England players in IPL 2024. This time around too, they have a couple of players from the UK taking part in the tournament. Jos Buttler is the first name on the sheet on every day of IPL 2024 and he will be key for them yet again with the bat. His performance throughout the season will determine how far the Royals will go this time around.

Buttler scored only 392 runs last season in 14 matches but he would want to double the tally this season with the bat. The other England batter in the Royals squad is Tom Kohler-Cadmore who is yet to make his IPL debut and might not get a chance too if the players don’t get injured.

However, if need be, the Royals can certainly bank on Tom who has played 190 T20 matches in his career so far amassing 4374 runs at a strike-rate of 139.68. Kohler-Cadmore will be hoping that he gets an opportunity to showcase his ability in the cash-rich league.

Chennai Super Kings

The five-time champions Chennai Super Kings do not have a single player from England in their squad for IPL 2024.

Delhi Capitals

With Harry Brook pulling out, even Delhi Capitals do not have a single England cricketer in their IPL 2024 squad.

Sunrisers Hyderabad

Sunrisers Hyderabad is the third IPL team who do not boast of a single English player in their 25-member squad for this season.

Gujarat Titans

The IPL 2022 champions and runners-up of last season, Gujarat Titans haven’t picked a single England player in their squad.
