Read on for everything you need to know about the KL Rahul injury, and when he’ll be back on the cricket field.

KL Rahul injury statement

After being carried from the field on Monday 1st of May, fans were hoping for the best.

However, Rahul has confirmed the worst in a statement on Instagram about his injury:

“After careful consideration and consultation with the medical team, it's been concluded that I'll be undergoing a surgery on my thigh shortly. My focus will be on my rehabilitation and recovery in the coming weeks. It's a tough call to make, but I know it's the right one to ensure a full recovery.”

“As the team captain, it pains me deeply not to be able to be there during this crucial period. But, I'm confident that the boys will rise to the occasion and give their best performance as always. I'll be cheering for them from the sidelines with all of you, watching every game.”

“Absolutely gutted that I won't be at the Oval next month with Team India. I'll do everything I can to get back in blue and help my country. That has always been my focus and priority.”

KL Rahul ruled out of IPL and WTC Final

As Rahul’s Instagram statement made clear, the LSG captain and opener will not be taking any further part in the IPL 2023.

The KL Rahul injury is a significant blow for LSG, who are sitting in third place on the IPL table but are far from having a playoff spot guaranteed. Rahul was one of their form batsmen, with 274 runs from his nine innings. This season was on track to be Rahul’s sixth in a row scoring 500+, and LSG will miss both his run scoring ability and leadership.

India will also miss having the option of selecting the opener for the WTC Final in June. The national side is already without stars Shreyas Iyer, Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant, meaning an inexperienced middle order.

Who will replace KL Rahul as LSG captain?

Following the news of KL Rahul’s injury, Krunal Pandya has been announced as the captain of LSG for the rest of the IPL 2023 season.

This makes two Pandya’s captaining IPL sides, with brother Hardik Pandya captaining the Gujarat Titans, who currently sit top of the table.
