India vs Bangladesh: What happened in the last meeting?

The two teams last played each other in the Asia Cup 2023 on 15th September. It was a super four match and it bore little consequence to the journey of the two teams in the tournament. As a result, both teams decided to rest some of their players from the main playing XIs.

India won the toss in the match and opted to bowl first. Bangladesh made a horrible start to their innings and were reeling at 59 for four within the 14th over of the innings. They had no answer to Shardul Thakur with the new ball, who picked up three of the top four batters.

The ‘Bangla Tigers' started to scrip their comeback from this stage, as the skipper Shakib Al Hasan (80 off 85) and Towhid Hridoy (54 off 81) stitched a partnership of 101 runs. The Bangladeshi lower order showed great resilience and did not the efforts of their skipper go in vain. Even after the dismissal of Hridoy, they were able to add a significant number of runs to their total as Nasum Ahmed (44 off 45) and Mahedi Hasan (29 off 23) formed a 45-run partnership. The valuable contributions by the lower order ensured that Bangladesh were able to put on a total of 265 runs for the loss of eight wickets in their 50 overs.

As the chase began for India, it was a general belief that the Asian giants would chase down the target rather easily. But Tanzim Hasan Shakib had planned something different and picked up two early wickets to give a rude shock to India. In the flash of an eye, the ‘Men in Blue' were struggling at 17 for two in 2.4 overs. However, Shubman Gill (121 off 133) seemed resilient and determined to take India home. Along with KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, and Axar Patel (42 off 34), formed small partnerships and kept taking India closer to the target.

However, in the end, Gill's wonderful effort went in vain as the lower order failed to hold their nerve under pressure. Eventually, India's innings ended at 259 as they were bundled out in the 50th over and they lost the competition by 6 runs.

Bangladesh will be eager to repeat their wonderful show from this last game in the upcoming World Cup match. India will look to maintain their current form and win their third game in the World Cup 2023.
