The right-handed Gaikwad scored 123 not out off 57 balls with the help of 13 fours and seven sixes. Gaikwad got his top score 71 when India and Australia faced each other just before the ODI World Cup. The right-handed batter got scores of 19, 8 and 8 in his first three ODIs, but he made amends against the Aussies on September 22 at the PCA Stadium in Mohali.

Gaikwad scored 71 runs off 77 balls with 10 fours and helped India chase down a target of 277 with eight balls to spare. Gaikwad and Gill put on 142 runs for the opening wicket off 21.4 overs to lay the platform for the Men in Blue in their run-chase.
