Lucknow Super Giants vs Chennai Super Kings match preview

Lucknow Super Giants

Lucknow Super Giants have had a mixed season so far in the IPL 2024, winning three out of six games and losing three. They have six points to their credit with a net run-rate of 0.038. LSG are coming off an eight-wicket hammering at the hands of Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens.

Batting first, KL Rahul looked in good touch with 39 in 27 balls but most of the top and middle order couldn't score at a good rate. Nicholas Pooran smashed 45 off 32 to help LSG post 161/7 in 20 overs. Mohsin Khan picked up a couple of wickets but the LSG bowling unit could not get through Phil Salt, who struck 89* off 47 as KKR finished the chase in just 15.4 overs.

LSG possible XI: Quinton de Kock, KL Rahul (c/wk), Deepak Hooda, Marcus Stoinis, Nicholas Pooran, Ayush Badoni, Krunal Pandya, Ravi Bishnoi, Naveen-ul-Haq, Yash Thakur, Mohsin Khan

Chennai Super Kings

The defending champions Chennai Super Kings have had a pretty good season so far, winning four and losing two games. They are on eight points with a net run-rate of 0.726. CSK defeated their rivals Mumbai Indians in the previous game by 20 runs in Mumbai.

Ruturaj Gaikwad batted at number three in this game and scored 69 off 40 whereas Shivam Dube continued his great form with an unbeaten 66 off 38. MS Dhoni then smashed 20* off 4 deliveries to enthral the crowd and push the total to 206. Defending the total, Matheesha Pathirana made a huge impact with 4 for 28 in four overs. CSK held onto a win despite Rohit Sharma scoring a century for Mumbai.

CSK possible XI: Ruturaj Gaikwad, Rachin Ravindra, Ajinkya Rahane, Daryl Mitchell, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni (c/wk), Shardul Thakur, Tushar Deshpande, Mustafizur Rahman, Matheesha Pathirana

Pitch and expected weather conditions

Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow is a venue historically known to be bowling friendly. There are two types of surfaces here – black soil which assists spinners and red soil pitches which are more balanced. The average first innings score in the IPL at this ground last season was 152. This season, the team batting first has scored 199, 163 and 167 in three games.

The weather forecast suggests it should be mainly clear and warm in Lucknow on Friday evening. Rain should not be an issue with no chance of precipitation predicted. The temperature is likely to range between 28-32 degree Celsius during the game-time.

Our LSG vs CSK Dream11 prediction for this match

  • Wicketkeeper(s): Quinton de Kock, KL Rahul
  • Batter(s): Ruturaj Gaikwad, Rachin Ravindra, Shivam Dube
  • All-rounder(s): Ravindra Jadeja, Marcus Stoinis
  • Bowler(s): Matheesha Pathirana, Mohsin Khan, Ravi Bishnoi, Mustafizur Rahman
  • Recommended captain: Ruturaj Gaikwad
  • Recommended vice-captain: Quinton de Kock

Here in the LSG vs CSK match prediction, let's shed some light on why we have opted for this XI for the Dream11 contest. As we don't know which type of pitch they will serve, we will go with a balanced side.

From the wicket-keepers, we have picked Quinton de Kock and KL Rahul. Leaving out Nicholas Pooran is a wide decision as the batter has an awful record against Matheesha Pathirana, who operates in the second half of the innings. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shivam Dube are in good form while Rachin Ravindra can not be left out due to his ability.

From all-rounders, you can leave out Krunal Pandya as CSK have destructive left-hand batters. From the bowling section, we have picked Pathirana, Mohsin Khan, Ravi Bishnoi and Mustafizur Rahman.

Moving on to the C & VC options, we will back Gaikwad and de Kock. Gaikwad is coming off back to back fifties whereas QDK doesn't have to worry about any major bowling threat in the opposing side.

Match prediction: Chennai Super Kings to win

There is not much to look into the head to head record as both these teams have won a game each with the third game ending in a no result. Looking at the teams for this season, one could say LSG have as strong a side as CSK. But Lucknow have lost their last two games with their batting unit not firing. Chennai are coming off two consecutive victories and have multiple in-form players. Our match prediction is for Chennai Super Kings to win.

Toss prediction: Lucknow Super Giants to win the toss and bat first

There have been a total of 10 games played at Ekana Cricket Stadium in the IPL. The team batting first has won six of those, which shows there is a bias for batting first. The pitches at this venue tend to get slower and harder to bat as the match progresses, making chasing a tricky job. LSG have won the toss in all three games played here this season and they elected to bat first in all three. Our toss prediction is Lucknow Super Giants will win the toss and opt to bat first.

Man of the match prediction: Ruturaj Gaikwad

Ruturaj Gaikwad didn't have the best of starts this season but has played a couple of big knocks in the last two games. He made an unbeaten 67 off 58 versus Kolkata Knight Riders and followed it up with 69 in 40 deliveries against Mumbai Indians. Gaikwad has a very good record in the IPL, with 2021 runs at an average of nearly 40, including one century and 16 half centuries. Back him to come good in this game as well.
