After a couple of upsets in three days, the Cricket World Cup in India returned to its normal ways with a one-sided game. The Afghanistan vs New Zealand result was as expected and the encounter was heavily in favour of the stronger team.
The Kiwis registered their fourth consecutive win of the tournament and are very much on their way to the semifinals. Afghanistan, on the other hand, succumbed under pressure after beating defending champions England.
The MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai hosted this match and spinners once again enjoyed bowling on this pitch. However, the batters who were willing to spend time in the middle also managed to score runs.
As far as the match is concerned, the Kiwis did well to post 288 runs on the board after 50 overs. Three of their batter including skipper Tom Latham scored half-centuries to post more than a competitive total despite struggling at 110/4 at one stage.
The Afghans, in response, started well but capitulated quickly to get bowled out in the 35th over of the innings. They could only muster 139 runs before losing all their 10 wickets and went down by 149 runs in the match.

The Afghanistan vs New Zealand result of the 16th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 was won by the Kiwis. Courtesy of the win, they topped the points table with their fourth consecutive win. It was a dominating show from them against Afghanistan who couldn’t chase down 289 runs.

New Zealand’s innings: After being put in to bat first, the BlackCaps found themselves in trouble at 110/4 at one stage. But Latham and Glenn Phillips added 144 runs for the fifth wicket. Both scored half-centuries while Mark Chapman smashed an unbeaten 25 to propel the team’s total to 288/6 after 50 overs.
Afghanistan’schase: Afghanistan openers added 27 runs up front but once wickets started to fall, they lost their way completely. They lost their last five wickets for just 14 in four overs with Mitchell Santner and Lockie Ferguson picking up three wickets apiece. Rahmat Shah was the top scorer for Afghanistan scoring 36 runs off 62 deliveries in the chase.

Glenn Phillips came out to bat when New Zealand had lost three wickets and things could’ve gone either way. But the man batted patiently with his skipper and resurrected the innings big time. Phillips scored 71 off 80 deliveries with four fours and as many sixes to his name. He deservedly won the Player of the Match award in this match.
