Top Ben Stokes centuries in Tests

135* vs Australia, Headingley 2019

The Headingley heist remains one of the greatest moments in the history of the Ashes. What Ben Stokes did in the Test of the 2019 Ashes elevated his stature to a whole new level. England were bowled out for 67 in the first innings and were given a target of 359.

Stokes just tried to hang in there while Jonny Bairstow was batting alongside before changing gears as wickets started falling around him. Jack Leach (1*) preserved his wicket as the pair scored 76 runs for the final wicket to clinch the match. Stokes finished an unbeaten 135 with 11 fours and eight sixes.

258 vs South Africa, Cape Town 2016

This was one of the best displays of hitting by Ben Stokes. In the second Test against South Africa at Cape Town, England were in a bit of trouble with 167/4 on the board when he walked in. Stokes scored his fifty off 70 balls while recovering the innings.

Stokes changed the gears and scored his second fifty in just 35 balls to register a stunning century. Stokes then went in the highest gear and smashed his next hundred off just 58 balls. He added a massive 399-run partnership for the sixth wicket with Bairstow. Stokes finished with an incredible 258 in just 198 deliveries, which included 30 fours and 11 sixes.

103 vs South Africa, Manchester 2022

One of the best Ben Stokes centuries came last year when they hosted South Africa at Old Trafford. England had just adopted a new attacking style under Stokes and Brendon McCullum. But they were hammered by South Africa in the first Test and there were claims of the death of Bazball.

After bowling out the visitors for 151, England were in a spot of bother at 147/5. Stokes rebuilt the innings along with Ben Foakes, adding 173 runs for the sixth wicket. The England captain struck 103 off 163 with six fours and three sixes. England went on to win the match by an innings and level the series.

155 v Australia, Lord's 2023

Ben Stokes' Test knock of 155 against Australia at Lord's in 2023 was one of the most remarkable innings ever played in the Ashes. England were trailing 1-0 in the series and facing a target of 371 to win on a fifth day pitch that was offering plenty of assistance to the bowlers.

Stokes came to the crease with England in trouble at 193/6, but he immediately set about rebuilding the innings.

Stokes reached his century in 166 balls, but it was in the final hour of the day that he really exploded into life. He smashed 58 runs from just 46 balls, including nine fours and three sixes. He took apart the Australian attack, particularly Josh Hazlewood, who he hit for three sixes in a row.

Stokes' innings came to an end when he was caught at backward point off Hazlewood, but by then he had done enough to give England a real chance of winning the match. England eventually fell short by 43 runs, but Stokes' innings was hailed as one of the greatest ever played in a losing cause.
