Rohit Sharma captaincy record (Tests, ODIs, T20Is, and IPL) – a statistical analysis

Rohit Sharma is the current skipper of the Indian Cricket team across all three formats.

He took over the captaincy reins from Virat Kohli in 2021 following India’s abysmal exit from the T20 World Cup in UAE. Subsequently, a year later, he was appointed as the test captain for Team India in February 2022, succeeding Virat Kohli, ahead of a two-match series against Sri Lanka.

Now that it’s been a few years, we break down the Rohit Sharma captaincy record and look at all the numbers that matter.

The decision to appoint him as a three-format specialist captain was lauded by several cricketing gurus. Most commonly dubbed “hitman”, Rohit is not only renowned for his aggressive style of batting but also for his exceptional leadership abilities.

The 36-year-old has so far led the men in blue in 69 internationals and has the highest win percentage (74% approx.) as an Indian captain in ODI cricket.

However, just like his predecessor, the side is yet to win an ICC trophy under his leadership. But it is worth noting that Sharma has done wonders for his Mumbai-based franchise and has led his side to five IPL titles.

Rohit Sharma captaincy record across all three formats

Rohit Sharma’s captaincy record in international cricket began during the Nidhass Trophy tri-series back in 2018 which featured India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh.

Team India went on to win the thrilling final against Bangladesh and were crowned as the well-deserved title winners. During this tournament, he began to showcase his captaincy credentials.

His intelligent move to save Dinesh Karthik till the end allowed India to win the last-ball thriller in fine style.

A few months later, Rohit was tasked with leading team India in the 2018 Asia Cup tournament in the absence of an in-form Virat Kohli. Sharma not only delivered with the bat but also propelled the Men In Blue to their 7th Asia Cup title.

That is when the Indian selectors began contemplating him as a future leader for Team India.

With regards to his captaincy abilities in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Sharma has amassed 3896 runs as the Mumbai Indians skipper with 25 half-centuries to his name.

Besides, as an MI skipper, Sharma maintains a win record of 56.33% only second to legendary MS Dhoni. In addition, Mumbai Indians have won five IPL titles, the most by any franchise.

As a personality, Rohit is not as expressive on the field as Virat Kohli. Rohit comes across as a cool captain who does not show his expressions openly and has considerable control over his emotions.

Occasionally though we have seen him show his outbursts at missed opportunities but such is the intense nature of the game.

He comes only second to MS Dhoni in terms of being the most successful IPL skipper. His ability to win matches in unfavorable situations allowed him to hog the limelight.

Rohit Sharma captaincy record across all formats in international cricket

Matches: 251, Won: 155, Lost: 89, Draw/NR/Tie: 5

Sharma has a calm and approachable personality which has led to an impressive Rohit Sharma captaincy record already across all three formats. He has immense faith in his bowlers and backs them during difficult situations when the chips are down.

Unlike his predecessor Kohli, Rohit has led his franchise to glory on numerous occasions. The 36-year-old aspires to do the same for his national side on a global stage.

Even when you see him disappointed when there is a missed chance or a bad ball being bowled, he is not someone to mull over it but gets back to the next ball immediately, pushing it all away. He is also someone who backs players by giving them a long run, a quality which has aided Mumbai Indians in its success.

Rohit has a combined win percentage of 61.75% across all three formats, marginally behind Kohli. However, these are just early days for him as the current skipper has already shown some glimpses of his extraordinary leadership skills in recent times. Currently aged 36, Rohit still has enough firepower in him to lead India to emphatic glories.

By now, it is safe enough to conclude that Rohit Sharma is one of the most successful captains of the Indian team. His leadership ability is undoubtedly astonishing whether he plays for Mumbai Indians in the IPL or leads the Indian team in international cricket.

He is the leading runs scorer in many of the matches he captained the Indian side.
