IPL 2022 Auction Rules: Complete rules, Retained Players’ List and Remaining Purse Value

IPL auction is always an important event in the cricketing calendar every year. Even more so in 2022 where a mega IPL auction will define how each team will shape up ahead of the 2022 IPL edition. Every IPL auction involves a lot of intricacies in terms of auction rules, the number of players who can be retained ahead of the auction. Here, we bring to you the latest updates on the IPL 2022 auction rules, retained players' list, and the remaining purse value for each IPL team in the 2022 edition.

IPL 2022 Auction Rules

Let's dig deep to know about the IPL 2022 mega auction rules:

Total Available Purse – INR 90 Crores

Each IPL team was allotted a total purse of INR 90 Crores for the 2022 IPL season. The purse value was increased by 5 Crores from the 2021 IPL auction.

Right To Match Card (RTM)

With all IPL teams already allowed to retain a total of four players, no RTM Card will be available during the 2022 IPL mega auction.

Retention Rules – Old Franchises

As per the retention rules specified by BCCI for the 2022 IPL auction, a maximum of 4 players were allowed to be retained for each franchise. Each team can moreover retain in a combination of two Indian and two overseas of three Indians and one overseas player among the four allowed retentions. Also, teams can only pick a maximum of two uncapped Indian players in their retained list of players.

New Franchises – Lucknow and Ahmedabad

The two new IPL teams in 2022 – Lucknow and Ahmedabad will have an opportunity to pick any 3 players before the start of the mega auction. The franchises can pick two Indians and one overseas player from the set of players released by the other eight teams.

Salary deducted based on retentions

4 players: INR 42 crores (16cr, 12cr, 8cr, and 6cr)

3 players: 33 crores (15cr, 11cr, and 7cr)

2 players: 22 crores (14cr and 10cr)

1 player: 14 crores (14cr if capped and 4cr if uncapped)

IPL 2022 Retained Players' List

The cut-off date for the submission for retained players list for IPL 2022 was November 30. Each franchise opted for retention as per the IPL 2022 auction rules specified by the IPL governing council. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) opted to retain two uncapped players, unlike any other IPL team. Punjab Kings made the least retentions in IPL 2022 with only two players.

SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) – Kane Williamson (14 Cr), Umran Malik (4 Cr), and Abdul Samad (4 Cr)

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) – Andre Russell (12 Cr), Venkatesh Iyer (8 Cr), Varun Chakravarthy (8cr), and Sunil Narine (6 Cr)

Punjab Kings (PBKS) – Mayank Agarwal (14 Cr), and Arshdeep Singh (4 Cr)

Rajasthan Royals (RR) – Sanju Samson (14 Cr), Jos Buttler (10 Cr), and Yashasvi Jaiswal (4 Cr)

Delhi Capitals (DC) – Rishabh Pant (16 Cr), Axar Patel (9 Cr), Prithvi Shaw (7.5 Cr),  and Anrich Nortje (6.5 Cr)

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) – Virat Kohli (15 Cr), Glenn Maxwell (11 Cr), and Mohammed Siraj (7 Cr)

Mumbai Indians (MI) – Rohit Sharma (16 Cr), Jasprit Bumrah (12 Cr), Suryakumar Yadav (8 Cr), and Kieron Pollard (6 Cr)

Punjab Kings will enter the 2022 IPL auction with the maximum auction purse value. The franchise retained only a couple of players, using a sum of 18 Crores from their kitty. Delhi Capitals, with four retentions, will have the least remaining purse value at the 2022 IPL auction table.
