The Indian Premier League (IPL) got underway back in 2008 and there have been plenty of IPL team owners over the last 15 years. Even as some of the IPL team owners changed over the years, a few of the IPL team owners have remained the same. Let's look at the IPL team owners list 2023.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Delhi Capitals (DC), Punjab Kings (PBKS) Mumbai Indians (MI) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are the teams that have taken part since the inaugural edition back in 2008.

MI is the most successful team, having won the tournament five times in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have made the playoffs 12 out of 14 times and won the title four times in 2010, 2011, 2018 and 2021.

KKR are third in the list of most successful IPL teams, winning the titles in 2012 and 2014 respectively. Back in 2022, the IPL added two more teams in the form of the Gujarat Titans (GT) and the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).

Kolkata Knight Riders owner

Bollywood stars Juhi Chawla and Shah Rukh Khan along with Jay Mehta, and Red Chilies Entertainment are the owners of the KKR franchise. Red Chilies Entertainment bought the Knight Riders team for a hefty price of $75.09 back in the year 2008. Shah Rukh Khan is the owner of the firm in partnership with Jay Mehta and his wife Juhi Chawla. Venky Mysore has been working as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Knights since 2010.

If reports published in Forbes back in 2022 are to be believed. the Knight Riders are valued at $1.1 billion. Since 2009, the Men in Gold and Purple have seen a growth of 82 percent. The Knights are among the popular teams in the IPL, having won the title two times back in 2012 and 2014 respectively under the leadership of Gautam Gambhir.

Chennai Super Kings owner

Second on the IPL team owners list 2023 is CSK

India Cements bought the Chennai Super Kings for $91 million back in 2007 when the BCCI conducted bidding for eight teams. N. Srinivasan, who was the Managing Director and the vice-chairman of India Cements, was the CSK team owner. India Cements bagged the rights for the CSK team for the first ten years when Srinivasan was in charge.

In 2014, the franchise underwent a change as the CSK ownership was transferred under the name of Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited after issues surrounding conflict of interests. CSK Cricket Limited is deemed as the sole owner of the Super Kings in the IPL. Srinivasan remains an active member of CSK's management setup. Srinivasan also served as the BCCI president and the ICC president.

Kasi Viswanathan is the active Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Super Kings.

Mumbai Indians owner

The Mumbai Indians are owned by Reliance Industries (RIL). Back in 2008, Reliance Industries acquired the Mumbai-based franchise for $111.9 million. It happened to be the most expensive bid for any of the eight participating teams in the inaugural edition of the tournament. Mukesh Ambani, the owner of RIL, bagged the rights of the MI team for 10 years.

Mukesh Ambani, who is also the Managing Director of Reliance Industries, has the biggest stake in the company. Nita Ambani, his wife, is the co-owner of the company. She is also the MI owner. She stays involved in various activities for the growth of the franchise. During the IPL auction, Nita stays on the auction table along with her son Akash Ambani.

Gujarat Titans owner

CVC Capitals is the  owner of the Gujarat Titans, led by Hardik Pandya for the last two seasons. They continue to be in the IPL team owners list 2023 after a successful first season. The company, which is based in Europe, bought the IPL team for INR 5600 crore back in 2022.

Steve Colts is the chairman of the organization. The company also has operations in brokerage and investment banking apart from their involvement in sports.

If reports are to be believed, CVC has 125 million pounds of assets under its belt and as many as 157 billion pounds in secured commitments. The CVC Capitals manages funds of more than 500 of the “highest quality, blue chip clients” from around the world as per data available in the official CVC website.

Who owns Lucknow Super Giants?

The RPSG Group, headed by Sanjeev Goenka, is the owner of the LSG team. Son of Rama Prasad Goenka, Sanjeev Goenka, is the chairman of the company. Back in July 13, 2011, the company was founded. The RPSG group bought the Lucknow team in 2022 after a bid of INR 7090 crore. As per reports, the RPSG Group bought the Lucknow team for a price, which was 250 percent higher than INR 2000 crore, the base price set by the BCCI.

Sanjeev Goenka was previously the owner of the Rising Pune Supergiant, who took part in the 2016 and 2017 editions of the IPL. They came in after Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) were suspended for two years for their involvement in match-fixing scandals. However, they are now part of Lucknow Super Giants and are in the IPL Team Owners List 2023.

Rajasthan Royals owner

Next in the IPL team owners list 2023, is the owner of the Rajasthan Royals.

Manoj Badale, who is the chair of the Emerging Media IPL Limited, is the owner of the RR team and has been in charge since the inaugural edition in 2008. Badale has a stake of 65 percent in the IPL team. Emerging Media IPL Limited acquired the Royals for a bid worth $67 back in 2008. The bid happened to be the lowest among all the participating teams in the championship.

As per reports, EMIP had bought a stake of 13.4 percent in the RR team from Kelowna Investment Limited, a Nigeria-based company, which is owned by Indian businessman Suresh Chellaram.

Lachlan Murdoch and Chellaram are the other two investors in the RR team alongside Badale. Raj Kundra and Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty bought 11.7 percent share as the owners for the Rajasthan team in the year 2008. However, in 2015, Kundra got involved in match-fixing scandals and was handed a life ban.

Owner of Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2023

Diego Group company, United Spirits Limited, is the current owner of the RCB team. Nina Nagarajan is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and the Managing Director of the United Spirits Limited. It happens to be the second largest alcoholic beverage company by volume in the world and is the biggest in India.

Vijay Mallya bought RCB team back in the year 2008 for a whopping $111.6 million. The bid was the second-highest to the $111.9 million from the Mumbai Indians. Maliya stayed as the team owner for as long as eight years before stepping down from his position because of financial issues and irregularities.

After Maliya’s departure. United Spirits Limited took over the ownership of the RCB franchise. Maliya is no longer involved with RCB in the IPL.

Punjab Kings

Bollywood actress Preity Zinta, Mohit Burman, Ness Wadia and Karan Paul jointly own the PBKS team in the IPL. Mohit Burman of the Dabur Group, Ness Wadia of the Wadia Group, Preity Zinta and Dey & Dey Group’s Saptarshi Dey bought PBKS back in 2008.

The team spent a total of $76 million. Burman was the highest stakeholder of the team while Wadia and Zinta had 23 percent stakes. Saptarshi Dey had a minor stake.

Zinta has made her presence felt at venues, especially the PCA Stadium in Mohali. She is seen cheering wholeheartedly for her Punjab team. She also tries to maintain healthy relationships with players apart from motivating them to do well.

Sunrisers Hyderabad

Sunrisers Hyderabad came into existence after Deccan Chargers went bankrupt post the 2012 edition of the IPL. SRH made a winning bid of INR 85.05 crores per year for a period of five years. The Sunrisers are owned by Sun TV Network. Kalanithi Maran happens to be the founder and chairman of the SUN Group. With 45 FM radio stations and 32 channels, Sun TV Network is one of the biggest TV networks in India.

Kalanithi Maran has been spotted during IPL matches, but it is her daughter Kaviya Maran, who grabs the limelight most times. Kaviya has played active part in the functioning of the SRH team. Kaviya Maran, who also happens to be the CEO of the Sunrisers, has been seen at the IPL auction tables. There are times when her pictures at stadiums go viral on social media platforms.

Delhi Capitals

JSW Group and GMR Group are the joint owners of the Delhi Capitals in the IPL. GMR Group, a property development company, bought the Delhi franchise in 2008 for 84 million dollars. Then in March 2018, GMR sold 50 percent of DC’s stakes to JSW Sports for INR 550 crores. The team also changed its name from Delhi Daredevils to Delhi Capitals.

Dhiraj Malhotra is Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Capitals. He is also the former Game Development manager of the Board of Control for Cricket in India. Delhi Capitals have a brand value of 1.035 billion dollars as per a report published in Forbes. DC is also one of the teams that are yet to win an IPL trophy.
